I don't understand why Americans celebrate Cinco de mayo when a lot of them don't even know what the 5th of May signifies. Also, you cannot incorporate EVERYTHING latin with Mexico. Salsa, Buena Vista Social Club... not Mexican.

I've always enjoyed ethnic celebrations, whether St. Patrick's Day (Irish), Columbus Day (Italian), or Cinco de Mayo (Mexican). Though I have Italian and Irish ancestry and not Mexican, that does not diminish my enjoyment! Besides, I know Spanish better than Italian. As a true food lover, I relish in the contirbutions of America's melting pot immigrant communities.

History lessons would help everyone. This is just another excuse for non- mexicans to drink more. Cinco de mayo is a day in history where the Mexican Army made up of only a few thousand took on and defeated the French Army that had twice the number, which at that time was undefeated, under orders of Neapoleon. If its a reason you want now you have it

Wow! you folks are fighting over a dumb article. The problems aren't at the borders, it's in yahoo's entertaining section. Get a life, American and Mexican alike.

We should celebrate Cinco de Mayo. what happened on May 5th, 1862 at Puebla, Mexico indirectly helped end our own civil war. About 4000 members of Mexican Army soundly defeated a French Army and Calvary that was twice their size and better equipt. That victory kept Napolean III from supplying the Confederate Army for over a year. The Battle of Gettysburg was just 14 months later. There may be some in the South that disagree but... Viva! el Cinco de Mayo!
Some dumby down below said "cinco de mayo is mexico's independance day not ours" Ha Ha, that show how ignorant that fool is, because mexico's independance day is actually on Sept. 16th. Cinco de Mayo is the day the mexicans beat french arse.

Hey, dkwelch21 ...you've got it wrong. Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence day. It is the day that the campesinos (plain old country folk) stood up to the French army and won a costly and bloody battle to send them packing back to France.

In Mexico they don't even celebrate 5 de Mayo like in here. 5 de Mayo was the day the Mexican Army defeated the French empire and prevent it from conquering Mexico and at that time a great part of the United States that belonged to Mexico and was sold by traitor Santa Anna, remember the Alamo? that's just crap the government made. The truth was just a piece of paper.

It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Have fun....................

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla where Mexican soldiers defeated the French at Puebla, Mexico, on the morning of May 5, 1862. I'm not Mexican either, but just like everybody's a little Irish on St. Patricks day, why can't everyone be a little Mexican on Cinco De Mayo?
