Kid Stuff

Remember when all you needed for a great bash was hats, chocolate cake, and a big tub of ice cream? Well there's no reason to leave those good times behind. Bring back your childhood faves -- and reinvent them with a modern twist. You'll discover that bringing out the kid in you can breathe new life into any party.

  • Start with some hip-yet-nostalgic decorations. Blow up funny childhood photos or just frame existing ones and place them all over the house. Guests will have a ball oohing and aahing over them!
  • Serve up gourmet hotdogs -- and we do mean gourmet! We got inspired by our favorite Hollywood haunt, The Stand, where dogs come adorned with the yummiest toppings -- like blue cheese, grilled onions, and tomato ... or corn relish and cheddar cheese.
  • Quench thirsts with newfangled soda pop. Check out DrySoda.com for cool flavors like kumquat and lemongrass -- and even cooler packaging.
  • Serve homemade popsicles. Create your own combos -- how about a luscious lick of lemonade and vodka? Or pomegranate accented with wild blueberries?
  • Serve up the sweets. Jazz up ordinary cupcakes by topping them with colorful retro candies like Life Savers, Dots, Sweet Tarts, or Good & Plenty. And set out bowls of Tootsie Rolls, Abba Zaba, Bit-O-Honey, and more -- they never go out of style!
  • Provide playful diversions like hula hoops, Twister, and hopscotch, guaranteed to bring out the kid in all of us!

Very cute ideas...i love the picture idea! I know people would love to take a walk back in time and admire the years people have experienced...I think I will be using this at my husband's 35th birthday party!

Would a lemonade and vodka popsicle really freeze?

All great ideas! I think Twister would be a fun add to the party or any childhood game of that nature. Especially love the popsicle idea, since you will probably be around the grill with the hotdogs!

Another terrific idea that we've done at several parties in our family is everyone who comes is required to bring a picture of themselves at the age they were when they met the birthday boy or girl. Tell them to make a photocopy so it can be cut up. Then you put that pic on their nametag. You truly see who are the nearest and dearest oldest friends. (we did this for my Dad's 75th...and all of us kids had baby pics. Was hysterical)

Great ideas! Was trying to come up with something for my Daughter's graduation party, not too grown up but not for a little kid this sounds great. I love the picture idea She is going to college to be a photographer, and has great pics of all her friends that can be used as a collage like through the years.

I searched online and found alcoholic drinks that *taste* like vodka but the only result I found for freezing the liquor (voka freezes below zero degrees) was using liquid nitrogen...

Some goodie bags with gourmet cookies or chocolate lollypops would be a great touch.

For candy, go to http://www.hometownfavorites.com/retro-candy.htm They have it broken down by DECADES!!! or http://www.groovycandies.com/ Another idea: For my oldest brother's bday, because he's a big Scrabble fan, we all wore tshirts that had ONE letter on them. Told him that he had to unscramble us....it said, "HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY SCOTTY"
