Fantastic Flowers On A Dime

Dinners and parties just don't seem complete without them. Flowers add color and elegance to any gathering... and they can add a pretty penny to your budget! But no need to spend a fortune, you can easily arrange your own designs with a quick trip to your backyard (even your friendly neighbor's) or the local supermarket. Here are some easy, elegant arrangements:

  • Petal Pushers  Gather a bunch of flower petals from the yard -- red roses, pink hydrangeas, yellow daisies, or white gardenias (etc.) -- and float three or four in each of several small decorative glass bowls filled with water. Feel free to create a color scheme, try all white, white and red, or pink and yellow. Then place a few votives around them.
  • Branching Out  Branches with a few leaves and small flowers still attached can be just as easy on the eyes as floral arrangements, so clip a few (keep them very long for a dramatic look), then fill tall glass vases with a handful of them for a great conversation piece.
  • Gorgeous Gardenias  Their aroma can be intoxicating and their simplicity divine! Float 5-6 gardenias in large glass bowls filled with water and add a small floating candle for added allure.
  • Everything's Rosey  They're timeless and enduring. It's hard to go wrong with roses. Cut the stems so that they are only about 2-3 inches under the bud.  Then group them very tightly in small square glass vases for an chic look. We love doing this with orange or fuschia roses.
  • Get Green... Maximize your dollars by buying lots of different types of greens, the kind your florist uses as "filler" -- feathery ferns and long grasses. Place them in a tall, slender vase and let them spray out. It's has a lush effect on its own, or you can add just a few flowers as pops of color.
  • One Singular Sensation... Rather than going for a large centerpiece, place a single bud at each person's plate. It's an intimate way to class up a dinner! You can tuck the buds (everything from roses to tulips or gerber daisies work well) inside a folded cloth napkin, or place in a small glass votive holder or ceramic egg cup.

Floating 5 or 6 gardenias in a bowl in the center of your tables will not only leave guest nauseated from their overpowering sweet fragrance, unless you grow them in your yard it will also set you back quite a few dollars! Likewise using a single bud at each guest's place (unless you have less than a dozen guests)! "Tightly packed" roses in vases will also run into some serious cash. Tall branches or greens as centerpieces: bad idea unless you want your guests constantly leaning around the shrubbery to make eye contact as they converse. This whole article needs to be re-thought!

Leaving a single bud at each place or tightly packed roses in vases can be very economical by ordering online and in bulk. Costco has great prices on bulk roses and other flowers. You can find great prices on flowers by doing your research online.

I hate when flowers or greens are in the way of being able to see the people across from me at the same table; annoying!

Florist use greens as greens. Accent flowers, not"fillers" are things such as solidago, Monte Casino,etc.. I am really laughing at the fact that you think someone can just casually go find lots of Gardenias when I as a florist need to special order at least 1 week ahead of time to get a box of 3. Next time consult a professional!!

Jodi has it right...leave it to the professionals. I too am a florist and can't tell you how many times people waste money on their flowers they think they can do themselves, just to bring it in to us last minute because it's not as easy as it sounds. Usually by the time they pay us just to arrange them last minute, in a vase that is appropriate, they could have spent less if they just came to us first.

Just make sure that when you float your candles, they don't get stuck and catch your flowers on fire. Bad idea. And don't have more than one gardenia at a table. Someone will get nauseous.

I bought round paper doilies and put a wedding invitation in the middle and surrounded the invatation with carnation petals and sprinkled irradecent glitter on the petals. You can get carnations in just about any color as they can paint them, so each table was a different color. The carnation petals had a slight fragrance which smelled nice. The whole centerpiece cost about 20 cents, people could see over them to talk, and I got quite a few compliments. You can even spray paint the doilies silver or gold or and color of your choice. No paying for candles or vases that you have no use for later. You can even have friends create different centerpieces. It is fun and people love to help.

Oh the florists just want to make a buck. We did the flowers and centerpieces ourselves and it was really nice.
