Dinners and parties just don't seem complete without them. Flowers add color and elegance to any gathering... and they can add a pretty penny to your budget! But no need to spend a fortune, you can easily arrange your own designs with a quick trip to your backyard (even your friendly neighbor's) or the local supermarket. Here are some easy, elegant arrangements:
- Petal Pushers Gather a bunch of flower petals from the yard -- red roses, pink hydrangeas, yellow daisies, or white gardenias (etc.) -- and float three or four in each of several small decorative glass bowls filled with water. Feel free to create a color scheme, try all white, white and red, or pink and yellow. Then place a few votives around them.
- Branching Out Branches with a few leaves and small flowers still attached can be just as easy on the eyes as floral arrangements, so clip a few (keep them very long for a dramatic look), then fill tall glass vases with a handful of them for a great conversation piece.
- Gorgeous Gardenias Their aroma can be intoxicating and their simplicity divine! Float 5-6 gardenias in large glass bowls filled with water and add a small floating candle for added allure.
- Everything's Rosey They're timeless and enduring. It's hard to go wrong with roses. Cut the stems so that they are only about 2-3 inches under the bud. Then group them very tightly in small square glass vases for an chic look. We love doing this with orange or fuschia roses.
- Get Green... Maximize your dollars by buying lots of different types of greens, the kind your florist uses as "filler" -- feathery ferns and long grasses. Place them in a tall, slender vase and let them spray out. It's has a lush effect on its own, or you can add just a few flowers as pops of color.
- One Singular Sensation... Rather than going for a large centerpiece, place a single bud at each person's plate. It's an intimate way to class up a dinner! You can tuck the buds (everything from roses to tulips or gerber daisies work well) inside a folded cloth napkin, or place in a small glass votive holder or ceramic egg cup.
