My easy centerpiece trick; I have a basket just bigger than a pony pack. I line it with foil (to protect fropm any water seepage), set a blooming pony-pak in the center, add green cuttings from the garden (hedges that need to be pruned anyway! Or snips of my Rosemary) and after the party, I can plant the pony-pak into the garden! Lots of table color, and no wasted flowers of money!

Hearty grain bread sliced, 3 fresh fruits, 3 varieties of cheese.....all sliced and ready to eat. Vary the colors of fruit for interest......or add more.
Simple, good eating.

Best thing you can do to make your party a success....do as MUCH as you can ahead of time! Recruit friends to help, or hire some college kids to help clean up and serve. And MOST of all....HAVE FUN! No one has fun when the host is having a meltdown.

Good Advise!
For App's I like to buy some interesting large cheese wedges (see your local grocery cheese selection) and some good crackers on a nice cheese marble with some grapes added. I get so many compliments when I do that.....and it's SO SIMPLE!
For Dessert........Large Fresh WARM homemade chocolate Chip cookie in a small bowl of yummy fresh Vanilla Ice Cream.

Nice ideas. I do agree that the gardenias would be much to fragrant in an area where food is being served.
And what is a pony pak??
Also like the serving family style..just like my mom would have done it.

Appetizers are the best thing to make for a party--you can have so many different kinds and the variety is endless. A batch of appetizers makes a great dinner for two and you can have a different dinner and try new gourmet meals of appetizers!

A pony pak is six bedding plants, in one of those little plastic containers that are divided into six little sections. I think that is a wonderful idea. It is inexpensive with no waste. I have also decided that I don't like the odor of florist's cut flowers. This would avoid that.

The best advice my mom gave me in regards to entertaining is to toss the random items (items used for food prep, containers that the food came in, countertop items, etc.) in the stove or dishwasher until the party is over - that way, you'll look uncluttered, but won't have to worry about finding a place for everything that doesn't really have one to begin with.

My best friend was hosting a wedding shower and her mother hosted. I think the best thing about the parth was that there were little trinkets for the guests and the color scheme of the room was very nice. there was even a theme like there was barbecue after wards since her wedding was going to be in the summer. it was really neat and we could wear flip flops.

Hannah- smart mom!
As far as the centerpiece goes, you can even float little tea lights and plastic beads or something similar in a bowl if you still want the floating effect.
And vanilla soy milk? You're kidding right? No. If half and half and milk isn't enough, then that's their problem.
Also, my mom makes a hot spinach artichoke dip that's out of this world!! She serves it with Triscuits or another whole grain cracker. Delicious!!

Themed centerpieces can be fun, creative and popular. For a friend's small wedding reception, I made a special 'edible' centerpiece. Their theme was the Caribean- because the couple went on a Carribean cruise for their honeymoon. I took a large plain round mirror: created an 'island' in the middle, with an oatmeal base, brown sugar 'sand', palm trees made from unshaved carrots and bell pepper leaves, and added broccoli and parsley shrubs, and small flowers. I even added a peapod sailboat with a white cabbage sail on the mirror-water...all put together with toothpicks and a little superglue. It was a huge success and I had great fun making it!
