Dress Codes for Weddings, Decoded

Daytime, evening, black tie attire ... it's hard to know what any of that wedding invitation jargon means. But don't let your wardrobe slack just because you're not in the nuptual know. Here, our favorite looks for the three most common types of weddings.

Gals...

  • For A Daytime Wedding  You'll dazzle in a gauzy flutter sleeve dress with peep-toe shoes or a tunic style dress with low kitten heels. Play with color but don't go overboard -- nothing too eye-popping or you'll be the big "neon sign" that stands out in every wedding photo!
  • For An Evening Wedding  Turn it out in a sexy wrap dress and high-heel open toe sandals. A few long, layered gold necklaces and you're ready to party 'til dawn!
  • For A Black-Tie Wedding.   Dance the night away in a black strapless dress (that hits just below the knees) along with a soft knit wrap, strappy heels, and a satin clutch bag.

Guys...

  • For A Daytime Wedding  Turn heads in a light linen suit with a crisp linen shirt underneath (worn with one or two buttons open and no tie required). A pair of suede loafers finishes off the look.
  • For An Evening Wedding  Toast the newlyweds in a modern monochromatic look -- a charcoal gray or dark navy suit with a button down shirt and killer tie of the same shade!
  • For A Black-Tie Wedding  Go Old Hollywood in a classic black tuxedo with a white button shirt and an elegant tie. Calling Cary Grant!

Thanks for the advice but I thought there would be a little more to the article. Maybe some example pictures

It would be nice to break it down by seasons as well. An afternoon winter wedding is quite different from an afternoon spring wedding. Also, more in depth about colors. I know white is a no-no, but are there any other colors that are totally off limits?

A gauzy dress for a daytime winter wedding is not good -- can you elaborate a bit more, please? It would be nice if you could cover more scenarios.

Black, for women, used to be a major no-no at weddings because black was considered a color for mourning, rather than celebrating. However, that no longer seems to be the rule, since black is now considered an elegant color. The main rule, I think, is tht you should not wear any color or outfit that would tend to take attention away from the wedding party.
