A Soup-er Soiree

As winter's chill settles in for a stay, heat things up with a casual and comforting soup party. Simply flip through your favorite cookbooks or search online for a few hearty recipes. Mix it up and create a variety of blends to satisfy all tastes. Choose from Tortilla, Vegetable, Butternut Squash Puree, White Chili, French Onion, Carrot Ginger, Minestrone, Bean, Mushroom Barley, and more. Simply toss a few steaming pots on the stove and you've got all the ingredients to treat yourself and your guests to a warm and memorable gathering.

  • Create a fun and festive invitation by printing an Andy Warhol-inspired image of a soup can online, then just handwrite all of the delicious details on the back. Or send out a big soup spoon and attach an invitation using ribbon or colorful twine.
  • Arrange the soup selections on the stove in big pots along with good ladles, allowing guests to easily serve themselves directly from the kitchen. You can also rent warming burners from a local party supply center and set up a buffet. If kids are attending, just make sure everything is set up safely.
  • Spice things up with a bountiful garnish buffet featuring shredded cheeses, crackers, croutons, onions, chives, herbs, sour cream, and other goodies.
  • Break up loaves of bread (sourdough, olive, garlic) into small chunks and place on large platters for lots of irresistible dipping.
  • Keep things simple by placing oversized soup spoons and napkins in one big bowl for easy access.
  • Serve easy bite-size desserts such as chopped-up brownies, mini-cookies or pound cake.

My husband and I used to have "Soup Night" the first Monday of every month during football season. We'd have an open house. Each of us would cook a big pot of soup and provide drinks, bread and cookies or something. It was a great time.

I wish there was a store just for carb foods, its so time consuming trying to read labels in the market to see how many carbs are in the food.

I already thought of a soup-fest about five years ago. I am on the cutting edge. I aready had a chicken-fest. That was fun, too. One of the guests went home with a door prize "I Went To The Chicken-Fest" T-shirt. The soup-fest prize winner sports an " I Went To The Soup_Fest" T-shirt

Can make soups ahead in crockpots while you're gone all day. Or you could host a Chili Supper and make a variety of chili recipes, including a mild one for those who don't appreciate spicy foods such as young children. Cornbreads go well with chili. Top off with a big salad and easy dessert. Our church hosts a Soup/Chili Cook-Off each year--each family brings their favorite recipe and everyone gets to go around and sample all the entries--it's a yummy event!

I threw a soup party in November and had a bunch of people over. Everyone brought a pot of soup. I had a couple loaves of presliced Portuguese Bread for dipping. It was the perfect bread for soup. We decided to make it an annual event. We did run out of ladles and burners on the stove, crockpots were a big help. I'll have to try some of the organizing tips from the article.
