How to Keep the Peace When Party Planning

Whether it's a bridal shower, fundraiser, or birthday bash, organizing and hosting a party with several other people can be lots of fun... and a little frustrating if personalities and tastes clash. Here are a few tips on how to make the festivities flawless!

Take Me To Your Leader  There needs to be one person who plays the role of key organizer and "den mother" to the rest. Otherwise, you're asking for chaos. The group leader should understand that it's not a dictatorship. He or she must allow everyone participating to have a say and contribute to the process, so there is a cohesive feel.

Divvy Up Duties  Once the group has decided on a style or theme for the party, it's time to divide up the responsibilities. One person does invitations, one or two handle decorations, others coordinate food, cake, goody bags, music, and so on. Often, people will volunteer for the thing that interests them the most, so give everyone a chance to contribute in his or her own way. If people are being hesitant, find the most talented artist, assign them the design and execution of cool invites and continue duty-distribution from there.

Play Nice  Often, tastes and creative visions for a party can be a bit different. One person wants "cutesy" and another wants "classy." Next thing you know, your party has a split personality. It's the coordinator's job to steer everyone onto the same path, but remember that a party is all about having fun. If every detail isn't matched to perfection, it's not the end of the world. Your guests will still have a great time and when it's all over, your friendships will still be intact!

Split the Cost  Budget can be the prickliest issue--by far.  Decide on a budget ahead of time, make sure everyone is comfortable with it, and stick to it! Remind everyone to keep receipts to give to the group leader, so it can all be tallied at the end of the day.
