10 Easy Ways To Increase Your Popularity

This weekend, instead of resorting to the old standby of a movie rental and some microwave popcorn, spice up your social calendar with something new. Here are ten tips to fine-tune your "going-out" skills and--who knows--maybe even pump up your popularity!

1. Be in the Know  Grab a copy of your local entertainment newspaper or cityzine, or go online and get armed with an arsenal of cool weekend possibilities--live music, comedy shows, a hip new bistro. People who know what's up are more likely to engage others, so don't wait for someone else to tell you what the hot ticket in town is.

2. Remember Timing is Everything  Inviting someone to join you at the last minute can make them feel as if they're your last pick, or sloppy seconds. On the other hand, putting out an offer over a week in advance (for "casual" weekend plans) can seem needy. Walk a fine line and think about Tuesday or Wednesday as a good day to extend offers to your Plus Ones or posse.

3. Don't Flake  If you commit, commit. Acceptable excuses for canceling include severe illness in the family, a national emergency, or major car trouble. Rainy weather, sick pets, or better offers aren't going to get you off the hook but they may get you labeled a "flake."

4. Know Your Numbers  Seven doesn't equal nine. Show up on time. Some people seem to think that a half-hour late is fashionable. It's just rude! If you're one of those perennially late people, build in an extra fifteen or twenty minutes to your plans.

5. Give a Little  Be flexible on driving or making the meeting place in a mutually convenient location. Buy a round of drinks--it fosters community instead of constantly dividing up dollars. Someone else will return the favor and drive or buy next time.

6. Dodge Food Faux Pas  When choosing a restaurant, try not to burden friends with your special diet--whether you're vegetarian, lactose-intolerant, or fish-allergic, you know you can find something to eat most anywhere.

7. Mix & Mingle   If you're at a party or show, be independent but never abandon the person you came with. Part of the fun of going out is getting to know new people. But don't take it too far and bail the moment you meet a dreamy new guy or girl.

8. Know When to Quit  Be sensitive to the other person. Know when to call it a night. Too early and it can seem like you aren't enjoying yourself and too late and your friend may be falling asleep on the bar. Also note: rushing out of one event to get to another doesn't make you seem popular, it just makes you look like a bad planner.

9. Send Thanks  It's always nice to throw a text or email the next day acknowledging the good time had, assuming it was a good time:). And with all these new tips and tricks up your sleeve, how could a night out with you be anything but!

10. Read & Forget  In the end, be polite, aware, and do unto others... Aside from that, don't sweat about rules. Going out is supposed to be fun. If you have fun, those with you will do the same.

It always makes me laugh when someone tries to make themselves look smart at the expense of someone else. Its even funnier when they fall on their face and look like an idiot. learnt (lûrnt) v. A past tense and a past participle of learn. (American Heritage Dictionary) Before you go criticizing someone else's spelling, try developing a vocabulary.

And the chain continues . . . " Its even funnier when they fall on their face and look like an idiot." That should be "It's," as in "It is."

This article sucked. No one does these things. Even I don't and I am the most popular girl in school. Popular girls are usually the smart and athletic ones who occasionally party. The popular girls are geeky on the inside, but beautiful on the outside. We do have flaws. My flaw is that at my old school, I was a nerdy-geek. I was the president of our spelling club. I could spell almost any word. I still can spell almost any word. The longest word in my spelling vocabulary is pnuemonoultramicroscopicsilicovalcanoconiosis and it means extremely small black lung disease. Don't judge the popular people because they're just like you. If you want to be popular, just ask someone that's popular if you can hang out with them or even easier, throw a killer party. It's pretty easy to hang with the in crowd once you're there.

What a ridiculous article. what is cool, what is popular? its nothing and means nothing. People who are cool or who want to be popular are sad, and really have self esteem issues and dont feel good about themselves. So they make themselves look stupid trying to impress others when all you have to do is be yourself. and if other people have a problem with that...so what? at least your not being someone your not. Meliz, that was one of the most ridiculous things i have ever read. you are obviously a very vain person. Spending a few years in the Marines will make you see and hear how stupid some people can really be, especially the one who think they are "cool" or "popular".

First.... I agree with Patient regarding people trying to make themselves look good by putting others down. Good God people.... these are "comments" not an enlish lit paper.... get over it. Second... to Meliz... I believe this article was meant more for adults and improving their social life... not on beconing more popular in high school or jr high. There are plently of people that DO indeed do these things. Lastly... to U.S. Marine.... if so ridiculous... when even bother with reading much less commenting on? I agree 100% with you on being yourself being the most important thing... but your assumtion that anyone who IS cool or popular as someone lacking in self esteem is ignorant.

I don't know how many people have seen "Anchorman," but the comment made by Meliz really reminded me of something Ron Burgundy's character would say. hahaha U.S. Marine, i think that she's being sarcastic

do people actually get paid to write this stuff? host a party with a theme, play sports, drive a nice car, get a haircut, or any other obvious method. or better yet which worked for me... 5 step process to becoming popular: 1. host a party and invite everyone, popular or not 2. make sure you have enough food/drink 3. choose popular music 4. pick a good theme 5. when the 3 most popular guys show up, tell them to go home because they did not invite you to their last party. result: the remaining 60 people will see how bold you have been and you become popular by default. after you throw the sickest party ever, the popular crew will want to be in your crew. party on.

I saw this article as more of a suggestion for social graces. These ideas may not make you more "popular", but they sure are nice when everyone in your group follows them as rules of common courtesy.
