Holiday Parties: What to Wear

From casual celebrations to cocktail soirees and decked-out dinner parties, here are tips for making one tasty and tantalizing entrance.

DRESS BY EVENT

  • Kitchen Couture  Even when you're the one doing all of the slicing and dicing, you don't have to throw on a frumpy sweats ensemble. Long before guests arrive, you may want to feel fashionable while getting cozy with the Cuisinart. Slip into some sassy flare-leg yoga pants and a long fitted t-shirt, along with a pair of cushy flats. Add a cheerful apron to keep you splat-free. Now that you're the most stylish chef in the neighborhood, put on some fun music to help avoid last-minute stress.
  • Creative Cocktails  You can always go with the everlasting little black dress.... Or you can show off your creative side with something more colorful. Try a sexy, jewel-tone wrap dress and a pair of peep-toe heels (that you can walk in for more than thirty seconds!). Or go with a pair of flat front, flared slacks, a dainty camisole, cardigan, and kitten heels. The finishing touch to either outfit--a few layered gold necklaces and an oversized cocktail ring.
  • Dashing Dinners  Pour on the sophistication with a flowy knee-length skirt, fitted v-neck sweater, chunky necklace and feminine pair of flats. Or go for contemporary elegance with a great dress, dangle earrings, and wedge heels. Be mindful of any dress with bell sleeves, as you could end up in that big bowl of creamed spinach!
  • Polished Potlucks  Casual gatherings, such as potlucks or Sunday night pizza-and-Tivo get-togethers, call for dark wash jeans with a cotton button-down shirt and a pair of mules. A pair of earrings (studs or small hoops) and a cuff bracelet are all you need for perfection.

FINISHING TOUCHES

  • Makeup Mission  Stick with the Foxy 5: a bit of cover-up, a dusting of powder, neutral blush all over for glow, mascara, and lip gloss. That's it-the only essentials you ever need for a flawless face!
  • Beautiful Bling  Don't overdo it on jewelry--strive for a look that's effortless, not fussy. You might not want to loudly jingle your way through a party with too many bracelets or too much bling.

  • Holiday Hair  Another thing to stay simple with: hair. Especially when you're hosting a gathering, it's not the best time to experiment with a high-maintenance ‘do that may come tumbling down halfway through the appetizer course.
  • Forever Fresh  Make sure your breath stays clean even through the most anchovy-and-garlic-laden Caesar salad by popping a mint between courses. And if you've been cooking, rub your hands with a stainless steel utensil to get the smell of garlic and onion off them.

It's a party! Where's the party at? Look, the best advice is to know where the party is at and who it's with. It doesn't make sense to give advice here. If you're cooking, it doesn't matter what you wear before the party. Some people cook in dirty draws. Who cares? Aint' nobody around til the party starts. And what good is it to dress in a sweater around a nice dinner, when they keep the house at 90 degrees? Again, you must know them to know how to dress. Has anyone ever been to a dashing dinner in the poorest of neighborhoods? YOu know these rules don't apply. Same kind of food and drinks... but different dress. With polished potlucks... man, you want to wear sweat and loafers to you can chill out on the couch. that's my advice. Why wear a certain color of jeans? Why wear black clothing at all during the holidays? Who wrote this column? The grim reaper? I'm ghetto. I'm sorry, when I go to a party... I wear THE BLING! Every finger is loaded with rings, I got the ice hanging around the neck and my earrings are blinding. How can we say to not wear too much jewerly? As far as bad breath? Well, simply brush your teeth, take in some floride rinse, and 30 minutes later pop some gum all night long.

I say just have fun, your attitude and persona matter more then anything else, People will remember the fun they had with you not what you wear.

THANK YOU! I have always known what to wear to a holiday party. As a southern "lady" it was just a part of my education. However, I have noticed many of the young ladies in my life do not understand the very basics. So Thanks from a mom, aunt, cousin who hopes her girls read this.

What about us househusbands blessed with wives who proudly proclaimed during our first date: "I don't cook"? While we learned how to cook, nobody taught us how to dress.

Pants and jeans to parties are so last century girls, let's bring back a bit of feminine power - dresses, dresses, dresses!!! Far more comfortable, easier to accessorise and far cooler in summer. And way more attractive on a lady.

The last tip comes in handy Anthea Turner advised the same thing. Rub ur hands with stainless steel. Its awful when ur hands smell of garlic or onion while ur trying to be the perfect hostess. No pretty dress can help than. :]

Depends upon the party. I mostly favor a black skirt with a red silk or gold mettalic blouse. For shoes, red or black heels.

My wife does not wear makeup or wear jewlery. You need water on those stainless steel items in order for the smell to come off. Holiday gatherings with my family or friends calls for anything comfortable. It does not matter. Being together is what counts, not what you are wearing. We are not that shallow.

When going to a party, wear only a smile. When the party gets hot, its the only thing that doesn't come off.

Kitten heels are stupid for any occasion. These are dull, lame suggestions. I'm sad for your friends who have to suffer your lack of personal style.
