Whether you're entertaining six for dinner or sixty for cocktails, there are simple things you can do to keep guests comfy and ensure memorable and worry-free fun for all.

  • Luxury Loo. Outfit your guest bath with thoughtful amenities such as breath mints, yummy smelling soap, hand lotion, and fragrant room spray. It's always nice to light a scented candle and put out a generous supply of fluffy hand towels as well.
  • Coat Check. Create an easy place for guests to stash coats and bags (other than piling them on the bed!) If you don't have closet space, come up with a creative solution based on your décor and layout. Hang an unobtrusive multi-hook hanger on the back of a door, or invest in an inexpensive movable clothing rack that can be collapsed and stored away later.
  • Rush Hour. If parking is a problem due to permit-only city streets or lack of space, devise a plan to make it easy on guests. Get visitor parking permits and place them in a basket by the front door... or hire someone affordable and reliable to handle valet service.
  • Musical Chairs. Avoid who-sits-where mayhem and encourage scintillating dinner conversation by setting the table with place cards. Use rubber stamps or custom embellishments to personalize store-bought cards with creative touches.
  • Smoke Signals. If there are any smokers in the group, create a place for them to take a ciggy break, whether on the back patio or front porch. Even if you're a smoker, keep things outside or in a back room as a courtesy to non-smokers in your group. And be sure to have several stylish ashtrays on hand.

Excellent tips all round. Thanks. A problem I have - I want to invite everyone I know to dinner or lunch but should I invite only like-minded people together ie some friends drinks, some condone it, some are crude, others prim and proper and some of my friends work for other friends. Is it a bad idea to "mix" types of people together? Should I rather have separate dinner parties? Patt

INVITE EVERYONE! I have similer friends, but the conversations of all the "mixed" personalities make getting together that much better. Give it a try and if this doesn't work well for you, next time you will know who to invite, or not.

It's how a woman would throw a party. Sounds completely sexist but true. I don't even know any guys that own scented candles or "a fragrant room spray." what a joke!

The thing with large groups like that is that like kinds fi0ne each other and the party continues without any concern. If they are all friends of yours they must have at least something in common. Invite them all and enjoy yourself. Personalities and preferences will take care of themselves and you get the joy of having all of your friends together at once. Stop stressing at have a great time!!

I think these guest ideas are great...you CAN invite all different types of personalities and sit back and watch the play..but it is fun to be giving of your home and create comfort for others. Happy Holidays All!

To the guys who commented, I would say that yes, this is definitily an article themed towards woman. Because often men and woman have different ideas of what a party is. And also you are right, depending on what kind of person you are this kind of party might not seem like very much fun at all. I think it might usufull if another article was created helping GUYS throw a party, Ultimatly what you decide to do is up to! This article is mostly about trying to make sure your quests are comfortable, that remains important to any party. If your a man or woman. For people who are working on smaller budgets you can still take suggestions from this article!Ideas like making markers for people to sit can be a fun, and give you a chance to get creative. It can be fun as well if you have a themed party. It is also realitivly inexpensive to make them. I think this article is good at least for sparking peoples ideas on how to improve thier party. Goodluck Everyone! ~Aly

I'm a guy and I didn't know a party was supposed to have food until a girlfriend told me. We thought a party was a keg of beer, jello shots, and some rock'n'roll. Thanks to women, we can have more sophisticated parties.

Not much for "ideas" here, nothing new really. What's with the coat check? You act like piling them on the bed is completely tacky. Just because everybody does it and they're not on a hanger doesn't mean it's wrong. And just a comment on the other comments: I don't think it would be ideal to invite all types of friends to this type of party, the tips are a bit snobbish. Feels too stuffy for me. Embellished place cards at dinner?
