10 Steps to a Labor-Free Labor Day Bash!

Posted Wed, Sep 02, 2009, 11:28 am PDT
POST A COMMENT »

Since Labor Day serves as a last hurrah for the season, who wants to waste it toiling over a hot grill or a stove for hours? Why not relax, kick off your flip-flops, and follow these tips for an effortless Labor Day fête instead?

  1. Type "E" for Easy  E-mail invitations to your guests and save yourself the time and tedium of writing, licking, stamping, and mailing paper invitations. Online sites like Evite offer a wealth of ready-made options -- or just fashion your own enticing electronic message and send it with the push of a button.
  2. Beach, Blanket Bingo! Keep decorations super-simple. Fill oversized containers (metal tubs, ceramic planters, and glass vases) with sand from your local home-improvement store. Then scatter a few white seashells or white votive candles on top. Ask each guest to bring his or her own beach blanket and enjoy picnic-style fine dining. This way, you create a beachy, end-of-summer mood ... and save yourself the time and effort of finding seating and table-space for a crowd!
  3. Put It on Paper  When choosing plates, utensils, and cups, go with paper or plastic. Don't spend your Labor Day laboring at the sink washing dish after dish after dish - especially when sites like PlumParty offer such delicious options for "disposable dining."
  4. Mangia!  Whip up an impressive and irresistible antipasto spread that requires almost no prep time. Purchase ready-made items like olives, mini mozzarella balls, frozen sweet corn, artichoke hearts, salami, and chickpeas, and just put them out in bowls. Guests will have a great time mixing their own concoction ... molto delicioso!
  5. Say Bye-Bye to BBQ  By the end of summer, everyone's overdosed on charred burgers and limp 'dogs anyway. So why not serve up a no-cook sandwich buffet filled with hearty breads, gourmet spreads, rich cheeses, and more? Start with flavorful fresh breads and rolls (olive, garlic, rosemary, onion, focaccia, etc.) and platters of sliced honey ham and smoked turkey. Put together a tray of cheeses, from bleu and brie to percorino and mozzarella. Then hit your local farmers' market to load up on extras like heirloom tomatoes, arugula, pears, and cucumber. Finally, put out an array of spicy and sweet mustards, olive tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, and other tasty toppings.
  6. The Way to Make It Is to Fake It!  Dress up store-bought salads in a snap, and no one will ever suspect they're not from scratch. Sprinkle fresh herbs, chopped nuts, grated cheese, or other garnishes on top to give potato, pasta, or veggie salads a deceptively homemade (and decidedly "un-deli") look.
  7. Bar None  Skip the high-maintenance bar (anything that has to be blended, mixed, poured, or puréed). Just serve individual bottled beverages instead of wine bottles or pitchers. Fill three large containers with ice -- one for beer, one for juice, and one for soda. And be sure to put out plenty of bottled water as well -- but you can serve that at room temp.
  8. Make Dessert Easy as Pie  Turn dessert into a potluck affair by inviting guests to compete in a pie contest. Ask everyone to bring their favorite, and appoint someone Taster and Judge. The winner gets a fun little prize, while you and your guests get to enjoy the tasty results. This makes your amount of prep time for dessert ... zero!
  9. Play the Shell Game  Create a fun and easy game for kids by hiding seashells around for them to hunt (sort of a summer version of an Easter egg hunt). Give each child a bucket and let 'em run wild. Whoever finds the most shells gets a small prize. (Books are always a good bet!)
  10. Go Clean -- and Green  Guests will clean up after themselves if you make it easy. That means putting out clearly marked (and BIG) garbage cans in several locations. Make sure to offer recycling bins as well, so all those snazzy paper plates and pretty plastic forks go to the right place.
And the party tips continue here...

Oh, forgot to mention the part about having your friends bringing a pie. I'm sure that will make their Holiday stress free as well. "Hey honey..... time to go to the labor day party, but we gotta make a pie first"..... Oh yeah, that'll go over real well....

What happened to my first post??? Sensorship on Yahoo??? Oh well, maybe it will show up later. If they even put this one up. It would be sad to think that we can't say something negative about an article, without worrying about whether they will post it or not..... I'm outta here, got better things to do than hang around to see if they post the first one.... Wow, my stress level just went up a few more notches......oh well, it's labor day weekend.....

After my snide comment, I skimmed over the article and some of the ideas and suggestions seemed to be pointed, by the writer of the article, to what the author thought of his readers. They needed guidance by someone who knows how to entertain themselves better than the readers. AND the pitch for "green", like no one will clean up after the dinner party. The sad part of this is that I am responding to one of the top ten dumbest internet articles that has been posted. Doesn't say much for me, I also vote. But, I do know how to spell sandwich.

Hmmm, let's see...take it easy but haul sand (!) home to fill buckets and tubs with it...run at least ten times to the store to get everything suggested in "Say Bye-Bye to BBQ (chic)", "Mangia", and "The Way To make It is To Fake It". Don't spend your time around the sink but keep contributing to our overfilled garbage dumps with an overproduction of paper and plastic as suggested in "Put It On Paper." That's right folks, run yourselves amok in another celebration of consumerist utopia, on a day that is meant to celebrate working class struggles around the world--huh, working class, what's that--uh-oh, HELP, politics, NOOO. Sazam-wham-bam, Yahoo-style glitzy-glamorous middle class --while you still pay $4 at the pump and might loose relatives in Iraq--oh, and don't forget to bring your i-Phones and latest other electronic gadgets to immortalize the pointless and obtuse commodification of yourselves. It's OK, you can vote for Obama to make you feel better.Kisses.

Blogging, how very interesting. Green, political sarcasm, stress, overload, and ideas for a fun gathering. I'd say that easy is relative and fun is simply fun.

lesse, here's a better idea this year. Take all that money that you were going to spend on people you probably don't care about anyway, and donate it to the Red Cross to help out after Gustav. But if you're insistant on having a party in the wake of a possible trajedy, why not just use the brain you were given for a change and come up with something of your own?

I have lived through so many Labor Day celebrations that all of this simpy makes me tired. Planning these "parties" seems like so much trouble for so little return. Makes me wonder what the point is--especially if you've done this same kind of thing 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 times!!

You can't recycle used paper plates and you can only wash and reuse plastic ware - unless it has the little triangle imprinted, with a number inside, forget recycling. Otherwise Happy Labor day!

I actually like the idea of donating the money, just as McCain said "We are going to act like Americans." Isn't it in the American nature to help those in need, and what a need they will have down in L.A. The unfortunate part is that I am not having a party anyway, but if I was, I would turn it into a social gathering and ask for donations instead. Great idea Drew B. Keep up with the thinking!

What no BBQ ?. Thats what its all about on the last day of summer. You start the summer with a BBQ on Memorial Day and you end summer with a BBQ on Labor Day. Start from there then you can take short cuts and think Green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! David
