Add Sizzle to Your Labor Day BBQ

Entertaining al fresco is a veritable Labor Day tradition. Add some sizzle to your backyard bash with updated classics and creative touches.

Splendor In The Grass... If you don't have enough seating for all your guests, no problem. Spread cloths on the ground and dine picnic-style! You may want to offer a few oversized pillows for guests who want a little extra cush for their tush. Make sure to provide shade, whether it's under trees or outdoor umbrellas. And put out a big basket filled with sunscreen, Evian facial spray, and bug repellent so everyone can enjoy a comfy and critter-free afternoon.

Night Moves... If your shindig is going to last into the night, rig up colorful paper lanterns so you can transition easily into after-dark. You may also want to buy or rent a couple of outdoor heaters to keep things cozy after the sun goes down and the temperature drops.

Plastic Makes Perfect... Invest in some heavy-duty reusable plastic cafeteria plates -- the ideal way to serve up all your good eats and ensure that nobody has to deal with baked beans running into their coleslaw (yuck).

Fancy Fixins... If you haven't noticed how many different kinds of mustard are available at your local store lately, check it out. From chardonnay-spiked to jalapeno-spicy, the options are endless. Experiment with an array of gourmet extras from mustards and relishes to salsas and chutneys.

Mini Me... Instead of "supersize me," why not "minimize me!" Serve up smaller versions of classic grilled goodies -- mini sausages, 2-inch turkey burgers, and corn-cob wheels rather than a whole ear. Kids love this!

Go Stir Crazy... Whip up a big batch of lemonade along with flavorful additions that guests can use to stir up their own concoctions -- blueberry syrup, iced tea, ginger ale, fresh raspberries, and more. Serve with colorful straws to bring out the child in everyone.

Ice Is Twice As Nice... Indulge guests of all ages with homemade frozen fruit bars for dessert -- the simplest thing in the world to make. Buy some popsicle molds and fruit juice (we've found that thicker, no-sugar-added brands work best). Pour, freeze, and serve. Experiment with different flavors -- you can even add diced fresh berries to the mix. In cooler weather, bite-size mini fruit tarts are a tasty and mess-free alternative.

Accidentally saw this but maybe will ask my wife or my Chef friend Shahnaz at Pannaz Restaurant, Damansara Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. re : www.pannaz.com.my to look into this. Sounds like the same as what he is serving at his restaurant BBQ stuff. Hmmm.. yummy!
