10 Cost-Slashing Holiday Ideas

We LOVE holiday time! From trees and tinsel to candy and candles. But what we don't love is the price tag that often hits us in January when we get a gigundo credit card bill for all those gifts, party goods, and endless accoutrements. So, here's a few tricks Foxy has learned over the years to reduce our holiday budget.

  • Shop 'n' Save  Sign up for Ebates and get cash (yes, cash!) back on purchases from hundreds of stores like Nordstrom, Pottery Barn, eToys, and more. It's all free, which is why we're addicted!
  • Wrap It Up  Make your own inexpensive gift wrap. Purchase a big roll of brown craft paper and a ball of twine from your local drugstore or office supply store. Both cost a fraction of what printed wrap and ribbon cost. Wrap your packages and then get creative with decorating -- candy canes, a holiday cookie in a plastic bag, beads, crystals, stickers or rubber stamps (in red or green ink for Christmas, blue for Hanukah, or gold and silver work for any occasion). You can even make your own gift tags by printing labels on your computer (use free clip art to give a holiday feel).
  • Ship Smart  Shipping can be pricey, so look for free shipping offers on internet and mail-order purchases. And choose a site where you can order for more than one person, since many stores offer free shipping after you've spent a certain amount.
  • Create Heirlooms  Begin a tradition and delight friends and family with meaningful, cost-conscious gifts. Dig through your stash of family mementoes. A necklace, vintage toy, or piece of china that belonged to Grandma or a great uncle is priceless and much more thoughtful than anything store bought.
  • Give A Little  Here's a fresh idea -- instead of scouring the mall for the perfect gift, make a small donation to a philanthropy your recipient will appreciate. Check out Charity Navigator for info and ratings on different organizations.
  • Go Handmade  Some of us are, admittedly, a bit less "Martha" than others, but there's always room to unleash your inner artiste. Paint-your-own ceramics places like Color Me Mine are a trusty resource. Use whatever talents you have, from painting or decoupage to knitting or cooking. Or, check out the addictive site, Etsy for hand-crafted goods available at all budgets (often, at prices much less than boutiques).
  • Sale Away  Search for promotions at various stores online, so you can take full advantage of fall sales. In many cases, if you have the right code, you can get huge savings on online (and sometimes in-store) purchases. Also, hit your local bookstore and check out their bargain book racks.
  • Picture This  Photo gifts always bring a smile to anyone's face and are available for different budgets. Check out online sites like Snapfish and Shutterfly for calendars, posters, bound photo books, and many more products you can customize.
  • Spread Secrets  Instead of buying gifts for each of your friends, throw a "Secret Santa" party so that everyone buys just one gift. Be sure to set a comfortable price point so that everyone gets gifted equally.
  • Punch It Up  If you're throwing a holiday gathering and want to serve cocktails, whip up a punch instead of serving individual drinks. It's festive and much more affordable. Cheers!

This year I informed my friends and relatives I would not be giving gifts. I did give some much-needed money to my 23 year old son, but that is all I am doing. I bought a few greeting cards at a dollar store. BTW, I think gift wrap paper at a dollar store can be just as inexpensive as brown craft paper, if not less. One great thing about not giving gifts is that I do not have to give away things I love and get stuff back that I hate. This has been a recurring problem as far back as I can remember.

On the "shop & save", note the stores mentioned. Not cheap by any means, for starters. when recieving free shipping during the holidays, DO NOT. I always pay for the express because when you do not get your items before x-mas, the store always says it is christmas, and you did'nt pay the shipping. The best idea I see on hear is the photos as gifts, I do that every year and it is always loved. Try making picture dvd's and setting them to music. That has always been a hit for me.

I found a great gift that is also cheap.. if your friends like to cook, even better. its this cheap cookbook called "Get in the Kitchen, BIT@HES!" It is seriously funny and under $15--- the website is [profane]cooks.com if you want any more info.

Another way to save during the holidays or any other time of the year is to frequent local estate sales...This is a new age for recycling and reusing!! My recent experience with one particular Glenview, Illinois Company is that they are very professional, very reasonable and it is amazing the vast array of items you can find. As per the saying, “they don't make things like they used to” in most cases this is an absolute truth...so why not find well preserved treasures for yourself & others to enjoy!! Peace & Joy to all!!

Rita Mauceri and Elycia Rubin. Your advice and style and humor are one-of-a-kind. That's coming from a person who believes that advice is usually better saved because no two situations are the same. Yet your columns are all with the best intentions, and are CORRECT most of the time in my humble opinion. Are you both married? If not we really should meet. Coffee, conversation, laughs, smiles? A posting like this is so not me....thanks for moving me to write this. Michael

Well, throughout the year, I'm always picking up cheap steals. It's wonderful because I get everything I want for little to nothing. In the end, I have a pile of stuff I never use. Sooooo, I take those items, put them in homemade baskets and give them out as gift sets. Everything from cheap lotions to hair care products...Christmas never has to cost a fortune. Try recycling things you have on hand and never use...just a thought.

We use beans. Allow me to clarify. Meat is expensive, so we use a little meat, and kidney beans or lentils as a filler, and it makes the dish very healthy as a bonus. Here is one recipe we use which is delicious. http://www.simpleorsensational.com/clsimplccbean.html

Well there will never be a shortage cheap tight wads in the world! Most people who are cheap are also tacky anyway, so they don't mind being stingy either.
