6 Ways to Live Large on a Small Budget

For many, cutting corners means cutting out all the little luxuries in life. We don't think that has to be true. Here are a few of our favorite Foxy tricks for saving a few bucks without giving up the good life.

  • Cereal Spending  As much as we love waking up to a big bowl of crunchy goodness, we don't love the price tag on brand-name cereals and gourmet granolas. Make your own granola using oats, honey or molasses, and mix-ins -- it's incredibly easy and you can customize it just the way you want. Yum!
  • Juicy Savings   Instead of buying your morning OJ ready-made in a carton, mix it up from a can of frozen concentrate. Sure, it requires an extra step (but how hard is it to add water and shake?). We just love that it costs less and gives us more servings per package. Drink up!
  • Smart Snacking  We love putting out small bowls of nuts when friends come over, but flavored cocktail nuts can be ultra-expensive. So why not cook up your own blend. Almonds tend to be cheaper than pecans or cashews and you can buy them in bulk. Try roasting the nuts with tamari sauce, a little sea salt, or Worcestershire sauce and seasoned salt. Experiment with other flavor combinations -- like this -- for a unique and wallet-friendly treat.
  • Smooth Maneuver  Make your own gourmet coffees and smoothies at home. You pay a premium for having them whipped up by a barrista at your local java or juice shop, so invest in the ingredients and make them yourself. The cost of five or six large smoothies can pay for a new blender!
  • Affordable Ice Cream  No one's expecting you to give up those tasty nighttime treats -- we can't enjoy our weekly dose of Gossip Girl without a bowl of ice cream in hand. But instead of splurging on gourmet pints that can cost $4 or more a pop, go for the affordable half-gallon of vanilla bean (try Edy's or Dreyer's) and add your own toppings -- crushed candies, fruit, or scrumptious syrups.
  • Economic Entertainment  When movie theaters are out of the question and even Netflix and rental stores are too much of a splurge, run to your local library. Libraries have a wealth of goodies at your fingertips -- from recent DVDs to children's books, novels, and cookbooks. That means if you're dying to read the vampire tome, Twilight, or your kid is begging for her own copy of Pinkalicious, don't drop dollars! Get a library card, and it's all free!

Yeah, go to your local library, just see how long the waiting list is to read, "Twilight". Maybe by sometime next year you'll get your chance! Go to Sam's club and buy it for $10.00!!

Rather than wait forever at the library, buy used CDs, DVDs, books, etc., either online or at resale stores. Check out vintage clothing stores. Save money this Christmas by making a strict $ limit on presents with friends and family and agree it's ok to buy used gifts. It's recycling. Or, get together and give to charity for Christmas.

Agreed...this is common sense...which is a common thing...but NOT common to everyone. Living large is often about the small things. To us it's Starbuck's to P-Diddy it's a $40,000 golf bag. Bottom line, every bit of cash you can save helps. If you don't agree with that, please send your extra cash to me.

I see negative comments of this ilk on just about every article I see which suggests a little common sense. Thanks, ladies, especially the tip about OJ concentrate. Keep up the good work!

Most of these comments sound like they are from minors who get their spending money from mommy or daddy (primarly Cheri and her comment about "$4 too much for ya?" ) when you have three children who "NEED" this item or money for lunch at school because they cant be seen eating food brought from home, it adds up. Yes these ideas a a little on the simple side but too many people dont think of these things as they try to be on the cool side of their friends. So hush your mouth and thank your parents for the extras (and yes it is extras you dont have a right to money) and go do your homework.

This is drivel. And the library isn't "free", it's our tax money. I know it's just a technicality, but I feel it's necessary to point these things out. So does Yahoo actually pay for these articles or are the authors given free email service in exchange for writing them? Either option seems scandalous, considering the consistent bad quality of this "advice."
