A Truly Local Fave: What's Yours?

Everyone has, or at least needs, at least one truly local favorite joint in their lives, a go-to place for real, honest food served in a straightforward setting. I have a bunch of them in New York City, and I live and long to discover them elsewhere. Sometimes all it takes to discover a local favorite is friends who live in proximity to one of these gems. Our friends Tom and Vicky Kaiser have a house in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, a shore town an hour or so from Boston that's just north of New Bedford, and they turned me on to the Oxford Creamery, a truly undiscovered and unhyped local fave.

Just how under the radar is the Oxford Creamery? Jane and Michael Stern, my friends over at Roadfood, live less than two and a half hours from the Oxford Creamery, and they have written nary a word about it. There are two books dedicated to seafood shacks, The New England Clam Shack Cookbook and New England's Favorite Seafood Shacks, and neither mentions the Oxford Creamery.

Just what is there to discover at the Oxford Creamery?

Befitting its name, there's a zillion flavors of pretty good ice cream, frappes, freezes (can anyone tell me what the difference is?), milk floats, milk shakes (no ice cream), sundaes, and soda floats galore. I like the butter pecan most of all. The soft ice cream is not even as good as Carvel or Dairy Queen, and the hot fudge is a sludgy, overly sweet disappointment.

The fried clams are crisp, greaseless, and well-salted, and the roll they come in is toasted and buttered. The french fries are standard-issue frozen fries. The lobster roll is a great bargain ($9.95 with fries and cole slaw), and features moist and tender lobster meat mercifully not overcooked. The crab roll ($7.25) might be even better, full of sweet, not stringy crab meat. Burgers are thin with a nicely griddled exterior, though not particularly moist. And then there's cacoila, slow-cooked shredded meat Portuguese style that's meltingly tender if a little too lean.

When you walk into the Oxford Creamery, you'll be walking into a time warp. You'll be surrounded by local teenagers, families, and senior citizens who have known each other all their lives. Yet it's one of those magical local places that makes outsiders feel most welcome.

I'm not saying that the Oxford Creamery has the best ice cream or the best lobster roll or the best fried clams. It doesn't have the best anything, to be honest with you. What it does have is real, honest, and crazy cheap (adding cheese to any sandwich costs 30¢ and a cheeseburger is $2.75) local food served up in unpretentious style by welcoming people. It's what I hope to find in every town I pass through, and yet it's becoming increasingly rare. If the Slow Food movement wants to take up a cause in this country, then it should take up the cause of joints like the Oxford Creamery. Because my greatest fear is that one of these days, I'll get a call from Tom and Vicky telling me that the Oxford Creamery is no more, and a McDonald's is going in in its stead.

So if you ever find yourself driving to Cape Cod from either Boston or New York, stop for a bite at the Oxford Creamery. It's less than five minutes off Route 195.

Have you discovered an Oxford Creamery–like place? Do tell.

If you're in Gaylord, MI, stop at Gobbler's! It specializes in slow-cooked turkey dinners, and every day seems like Thanksgiving Day. And since the turkey has been slow-roasting all morning, it's ready to get to the table right away - we got our plates within 5 minutes of ordering! They have homemade pies, the best buttermilk biscuits (which, by the way, make a lovely strawberry shortcake), and plenty of smiles from the waitresses. What's missing? The computerized cash register. The antique decor matches the technology here. How refreshing.

Are we talking about the most creative condiment additions, or the best tasting frankfurter, with or without stuff? Best tasting DOG is, without a doubt, Casper's Hot Dogs in the SF Bay Area, primarily Oakland and Concord. Just mustard, relish, tomatoes and onions. They POP when you bite 'em and they are dee-lish-ous! Eaten maybe 30,000 (?) in the last 60+ years!

Wasses Wagon, Rockland and Belfast Maine. The best hot dog you could ever eat! Been eating those dogs since 1976. Oh! And we have to mention our famous 3 generations owned sandwich shop, in Bangor Maine....The Coffee Pot! If you love italians, these are the best. They use some secret ingrediant, cant figure what it is... only that it makes these italians amazing!

Bagheri's Italian Resturant, Denton, Texas (just north of DFW). A whole in the wall, Italian eatery, BYOB with charm. Hookah Pipes, for a minimal price, the owners recognize anyone who has been there once. Fresh wine glasses for you bottled delights- the food is excellant. There is a Dama Bianca sauce for pasta dishes that advertises just a hint a cream- they LIE. It's drowning in marinara and cream- it's so bad that you don't even feel guilt eating it. And hard pressed for most diners to eat an entire plateful- doggie bags recommended. It's not as great the 2nd day, but keeps the taste buds lingering for more.

The best all around meal is located at Hema's Kitchen on just a few blocks east of Western ave and Devon ave. This Indian gem makes food fit for royalty. It gets a perfect 10. No other restaurant that I have been to on the entire globe matches Hema's. The herbs and flavors burst in your mouth. You will not be disappointed. Norman of Primeterre.com

Purcellville, VA has an unknown treasure! If you are a cyclist, check out the entire W & O bike trail (45 miles one way). It goes into Loudon County and the very picturesque town of Purcellville. Across the street from the bike shop is the wonderful restuarant, Magnolia. We ate there on Sunday ( in cycling gear and we were royally treated!). The other guests wore a mixture of cycling gear, casual dress and, of course, Sunday best... and everyone gets treated like they are the best customers! The food and service were great... I had the Southestern chicken salad with the chicken soup...fantastic. My other half had the salmon salad, which he raved about. Another surprise... great cappucino. On the prices, a shocker... they were on the low side. The atmosphere was wonderful... will we go back??? Magnolia will see me everytime we bike in the area!

Dave's Diner in Middleboro, Ma has some of the best breakfast around. The homefries literally melt in your mouth and the omelets are huge. Their lunch and dinner menu are really good too. They serve lots of food for not a lot of money. I have to go every time I'm in the area.

I live in a very small city, yet eventhough I a vegerterian now - Presidents have come here to eat at Austens BBQ on Grover Street. I tell you the street strickly because there are 2 due to brothers. The one on Grover is the greatest BBQ in the world. When I was pregnant with my girls I would pace the floor ready to spring for my husband to get home at 5:00 to go there and eat. Talk about sad life. But it is totally worth it I can't anymore, since I am committed to not eating animals. But if you love BBQ, you need to Drive!

In Indianapolis there is a family-owned 50's style place, complete with carhop, that have some of the best food. Tenderloins are hand-breaded, onion rings dipped to order, and they mix their own root beer. The place was recently rebuilt due to a fire, but still has plenty of old time nostalgia to go along with some absolutely GREAT food.

I'll have to jump on the hot dog bandwagon first and add that the best hot dogs (with or without all the goodies - including awesome chili! Inexpensive doesn't cover it at only $2-3 per dog depending on what you get on it) have to come from Smiley's hot dog stand in Thousand Oaks, CA - if you can manage to find where he is parking his NY style cart for the day, then you are in luck! And if you want a really tasty breakfast (and probably the best omelets ever!) then stop in at Harold's Cafe in Thousand Oaks, CA - they have a HUGE selection of omelets to choose from and they make incredible pancakes and waffles too, all at VERY affordable prices.

Sammie Smok House BBQ in Shreveport, LA. I am newly transported from Dallas so I am sampling my way thru the great state of Louisiana but this gem is literally in my backyard. The BBQ ribs are great but the Pecan Cobbler is to die for. I have gained a few pounds because I swear I bought pints of this stuff twice a week my first month in Shreveport! NO MORE TIL the end of the month! ; - )

A freeze is where you blend soda (or pop if you're from the midwest) with ice cream. Its basically a blended float.Sheridan's Frozen Custard has those, and they're awesome! Their rootbeer is from milwaukee from a company called sprecher. . . its so good! The rootbeer freeze is the best.
