We've got a number of great folks writing for us at Serious Eats, and today, our gadget guy, Harold Check, brings us this tip. Enjoy! —Ed

File this one under the third "G," geekery. Unclutterer, a slick new blog that offers advice on staying organized, just posted a straightforward how-to about creating a personal cooking notebook, using Post-Its, sheet protectors, and a three-ring binder. It's the site's latest post on reducing kitchen clutter, and while most Serious Eaters might be hard pressed to go on the drastic cookbook diet they suggested in a previous column, I can whole-heartedly endorse the wonders of sheet protectors to extend the life of printed recipes beyond one sauce-drenched session. They're also great for adding pages to the aforementioned three-ring binder without having to rummage through your desk drawers for that ultimate unitasker, the hole-punch. My only amendment to Unclutterer's recipe-binder recipe: spring for a "break-back easel" binder that's built to stand up on its own , saving you time and counter space as you dart between binder, mise en place, and stove.

    For Christmas in 2000, I actually made my daughters and sisters a personal cookbook for each of them. But I made them in the 5 1/2 by 8" binders and sheet protectors and printed spine labels for each with their names and the date of each. I gathered basic recepies as well as some of my own special creations, recepies. They loved these and my youngest daughter who just got married, live by hers.

    I've been doing this for years. Now I know I'm not the only one. By using colored dividers, it's a great way to keep things categorized.

    I saw this story on Yahoo! Food and thought that you might be interested. Just thought you might be interested in McDonalds. Next time, get a double cheese burger. order it without cheese. Take 12 napkins and hurry to your table. put two on the table and take one of the burgers and put it on the napkins, put two more napkins on the top and squeeze all the grease out you can. Do the same with number 2. If you don't use all 12 napkins you are doing something wrong. Go to BK, Wendy's and the rest and try the same thing. While you are visiting the fast food places or any other food establisment, check out there habits. Scratching there ass. hair, sneezeing in there hands, picking there nose, and try to catch one going to the bathroom. Try to stay until they leave and see if they wash there hands. If they wash there hands you found a pretty clean place. . Guess what, they don't even wear gloves at the most of them. As far as the fries go...... order some and take a couple of them and put them in a napkin and squeeze them and see how much grease you get. If you can find a place that BAKES there fries and you have found a healthly place to eat. Also order your fries with no salt and salt them yourself. FROM A PERSON THAT HAS BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT WITH SAD RESULTS. RD

    I agree with Grillinman75!!!! What are all of you talking about??? You are suppose to be giving examples or ideas or sharing what you know about making your own cookbook! Get with the right blog or get out! Weirdos!

    In 1985 I made cookbooks for my daughters using the recipes I had been given through the years from their great aunt (terrific cook), great grandmother (the absolute best cook) and their grandmother. The recipes mean something to them plus they have the directions to use those recipes for their children. I divided into categories (beverages; cakes, cookies, pies; other desserts; breads; entrees - divided into chicken, beef, pork; and vegetable sides. I also included vital information for any cook on substitutions and measurement. Packaged it all in a three-ring binder with reinforcements. There are several plasatic sheets which can be moved to cover the recipe against spillage while you're creating.

    I can't believe you missed KANE'S DONUTS in Saugus, MA ... it's been there over 50 years and I even ship 'em from MA to FL for my parents! everyone in New England and beyond knows KANES... how did they miss that one!? And the coffee rolls are "to die for"... they're as big as your head too! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm!! Yum!

    I agree Kanes Donuts are the best!!! How was that missed?? They were voted in the top ten in the nation.You really should try them, it is Donut heaven!!!
