I agree with all except number 2 for the ladies... I may be incredibly old-fashioned, but I love roses/flowers for V-day. The rest are pretty spot-on and humorous.

We split this holiday. He buys for me on Valentines and I buy for him on Sweetest Day. That way we both aren't raking our brains when the day comes. I don't feel the need to over analys every detail of the day. I know he loves me and I, him. the dollar amount of a gift can't express that.

The editor says neither gender should give food or cook dinner, yet the same page boasts "6 No-Reservations-Necessary Valentine's Day Menus That Won't Break the Bank."
Pick a side and stick to it.

well considering that his birthday is the next day, he's lucky if he gets candy. and i'm lucky if he remembers at all
and that's ok. because it's not about the gifts.

It's nice to know that women are as materialistic, vain, and shallow as ever. So much for liberation and equality, it's all about having copious amounts of cash spent on you.

That's amazing that you indicate HOMEMADE COUPONS are a NO-GO. In such a materialistic world, the fact that someone would make an effort to personalize something which can be kept forever should be commended, not shunned. Without question, you are wrong on #4.

I like a lot of these things on the list so I don't think anyone should listen to others. I think it's the thought that counts. Something is always better than nothing. Plus if you truly love your significant other you won't over analyze the gift or the day.

No offense but some of theseare just plain ridiculous. Generalizing all men and women as to what they'd like or not like is a complete waste of an article.
I'd love some of the ideas that she mentioned not to ger "HER" so I guess that means this article doesn't apply to me or my him.
Besides Valentine's Day is a commercial holiday that is plainly outdated in my opinion. Me and my fiancee give eachother little gifts for no special reason what so ever and those are much mor meaningful than being like sheep and buying something for V-Day

Yeah, I totally disagree with guy gift #4 -- if you both work all day and are tired at night, a special dinner can be so much more of a gift than "something that comes in a box". Seriously . . . be really romantic this year, take Friday the 15th off and go away for a really long weekend that simply *starts* with dinner.

I've got a big problem with "for her" when it comes to toys... My wife actually told me to get her a video game.. and which one to get... now of course I'm putting more with it... but you have to admit guys, I have an awesome wife....
That was her that kicked you butt on Halo 3 Live last night.. ha ha...

I think the things you wrote are right on the money I have been with my husband for 20 years and this will be our first Valentine that we dont get each other anything we both agreed on that. I guess its because our Wedding Anniversary is a week later on the 21st and that is more important to us than any man made date.

As far as the no vacuum and stuff like that... If I need a vacuum, I'd love to get one. I'm all about making the gifts pracitical. I know.. I'm the only girl in the world who thinks that way... If I need something, whether a vacuum or something more 'fun' like a dvd player, I'd like him getting it for me... It's something I'll use all the time, and I don't have to go out and spend the time to shop for it.

#8 for her is so wrong. i would love tickets to the big game. sporting events are always fun and its nice that he decided to take her and not his buddies

Are you kidding me? if my guy got me practically any videogame: I would be SO happy.
Maybe because im a gamer girl: but a lot of these seem to be off, and only apply to prissy prudish chicks.

what a load of crap and full of sexist cliches. i'll take 2 tickets to any football game as well as a good video game over a bunch of roses or candy anyday!
happy valentines day!

It's just a Hallmark Holiday... I love my man 365 days a year.
This is a fun time to share that love, but are gifts absolutely necessary? Personally, I nice mushy card with his hand written "I Love You" at the end is absolutely perfect for me.
