I thoroughly agree with Christel R . If people could only get that maxim cemented in their mind and change their eating habits in- stead of going on diets. It is a way of living and not an instant cure of any special recipes. As my Doc taught me, "Anything in moderation" is good.

Red meat in unhealthy, whether you need to lose weight or not. Try falafel and other bean dishes instead for protein and make most of your meal consist of vegetables. How about skipping the idea of hamburger & grease altogether?

People that put there were no low carb options should look at the recipies a little more closely. the beef stew has 12g carbs in it (not too horrible)... but if you want low or no carb options, make the burgers- don't put it on bread... same with the Fajitas. I try to stay low carb and just be responsible about it. There are also many low or no carb bread alternatives that are not too bad... try those with the fajitas and tacos!

unfortunately, these are pretty high in calories, and the calorie count is omitting important menu items; the hamburger is shown on bread, but the caloric accounting does not. Add another 150 calories to that 400 calorie burger, that one burger contains half the calories recommended for the entire day. Weight Watchers has far more healthy menu suggestions, and not so misleading to the uneducated person who believes 550 calories and 12 grams of fat for one 'entree item is good.

Just eat a nice fiber cereal with no fat milk for morning, chicken, fish, shrimp or tuna salad for lunch, don't eat dinner, maybe have a piece of fruit or vegetable, drink alot of water, exercise 5 times a day for an hour and you'll be in the shape of your life in 6 months!

Except for people who have super high diabetes or are vegan - there is something here for everyone and they look good! I think some people didn't look at the recipes - yes they call for making it yourself and yes some of them have healthy fat in them. I am pleased with the recipes and I am usually very critical. Hey Kent - a lot of the pastas are whole wheat so I think you are being overcritical - even diabetic eat carbs particularly low glycemic ones like whole wheat pasta

No mention was made of bleached flour. The bleaching process results in a compound called alloxan that destroys beta cells in the pancreas. We all know what happens with a crapped out pancreas.

Get a clue everybody! Stop eating the poison genetically modified food that is out there in the supermarkets, and get off your fat behinds and do some exercise, by starting a garden, or taking a walk, or having some good sex! I guess when you get acid reflux after each meal or when your friends or loved ones are dying from incurable cancers that were never around before our "modern. new improved" diets were introduced, that doesn't put up a red flag for you all? Eat natural. What that means is food that isn't modified from it's natural state. A raw food diet really is the best, but that is for each body to decide. Do the research and most importantly experiment and see how you feel. Good luck America!!!

Why do people leave comments when they don't even apply. This isn't about whether or not meat is good for you. It's for us Meat eaters that like to get tips on lowering their fat cosumption and enjoy their meals. Obviously you can see that portion has been taken into consideration in these so why argue...just to argue.

I've always wondered why people think sitting at a dinner table is more healthy than eating in front of a TV if you eat the same amount of food? And try mixing in low fat food while lowering food portions and most importantly: exercise!!! Get you heart rate up for at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity (walking, running, biking...not just going to a gym, do a sit up all while yacking on the cell phone).

comment on bri_boy24's comment: as the cook for my family, i made burgers, brown rice and a veg regularly as one night's dinner. after a while, i started to use more than a pound of beef for 4 burgers. i finally realized that and cut back to no more than 1.25 lb to make 5 burgers! (my teenage son eats 2) comment on doodle95bug: ever notice people who eat at mcdonald's? they're much more obese than those at in n' out burgers. dress different, too. people ordering at mcdonald's wear loose baggy casual clothes. people eating at in n' out burger are more athletic looking, fitter looking and wear outdoorsy looking clothes! check it out

Let's face it, diets & cutting out our favorite foods don't work. What works is a change in attitude about how much we eat, what we eat and to do physical activities we might enjoy like snowshoeing, walking the dog, etc. for at least 30 minutes a day. I say moderation is key and if you can lower your intake of saturated fats all the better. You might get away with eating a menu of junk food every day when you're 20 but it will catch up to you in your 50's. It's not even a matter of living longer. Having quality of life well into your 80's or 90's seem like a good reward for healthful eating.

These recipes are a healthier way to cook and eat foods that most people already like. If you're looking to lose weight you must watch portion sizes! Also keep close attention to extras...for example the calories for the burger recipe do not count the bun and the spaghetti and meat ball recipe uses whole grain pasta...adding or changing these ingredients will increase the number of calories. Losing weight is all about taking in less calories than you are burning. These are great alternatives but don't think you can eat 2 burgers with buns, potato chips, and a coke for lunch and still lose weight!

ok, seriously, for those who think that fat is good for you, you have been dooped! there is a such thing as "good fats" and "bad fats". and that is where it counts. these recipes have all the antioxidants, good fats, etc you just to become healthy. If you like the fluff, thats fine, just eat the correct fats.

Wow, cooking something isn't usually deemed "wasting your time" for those trying to be healthier. Also, none of these recipes are very low in fat. Some have as much as 20 grams of fat per serving. That is absurd if you are trying to be healthier. It is too bad because I was excited about these recipes. They are not actually healthier versions of anything though. No one would lose weight eating this unless they normally eat a bucket of lard.

You know...if people actually spent as much time at a gym as they do trying to find the miracle diet that works for them, they might actually lose weight. Low carb, high protein, blah, blah, blah. The simple fact of the matter is that you need a well balanced diet and exercise. And you know what, the more you work out, the more you can eat. I myself eat anywhere between 3000 and 3500 calories a day. Then again i'm in the gym two to three hours a day not on my couch being lazy.

True - fat is NOT bad but it IS calorie dense. One tablespoon of butter is about 100 calories which equals about 8 cups of spinach. Reducing the amount of 'fatty foods' forces you to eat alot more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. I get enough fats and fatty acids from nuts, fish, and the occasional sprinkle of olive oil. I have been eating whole foods since December 1, 2007 and have lost 11 pounds already.

First let me say sorry to the author but, these are awful recipes. If you are trying to lose weight then you need to have a lifestyle change not just a diet change. If you are overweight you are obviously not leading a healthy lifestyle and making excuses like carbs make me fat and I have a gland issue, are just that excuses. If you are genuinely interested in losing weight and making a lifestyle change then I recommend picking up the book Skinny B-i-t-c-h by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. It is a great read; you will be rolling on the floor laughing or crying if you are over sensitive. The book addresses diet along with lifestyle changes that must happen to lead a happy and healthy life. The book is well cited from several medical journals and their slap-stick, no-nonsense writing will keep you entertained as well as informed.

This recipe is terrific. Some people miss the point that this is a comfort food recipe. Making this by far at the right proportions is a major improvement of buying the fast food equivalent. I have been able to loose weight by basic preparation of my own meals and controlling where I want to be. Its a major change to just to do that and to try to go total vegan or whatever Jc is declaring about beef is ridiculous. Also the idiotic postings saying get to the gym are also as heartless. Weight control requires a synergistic approach to succeed. Physical and behavioral changes make the change more than a on off yo yo effect or worse a downward spiral. Its a new year be positive and take ownership of change and make your new meals for a healthier you and family.

I agree with some of the other comments about the well documented health risks associated with eating meat and dairy. A recent study just linked lung cancer to eating red meat (30% increase in risk). All the while second hand smoke has only been known to increase risks of lung cancer by less than 1%. It's time for people to come to grips with the reality that we are all biological VEGANS. The science is finally out of the bag despite huge resistance and misinformation campaigns by the corporations that don't want us to be well informed, healthy and happy. There's little profit in preventative maintenance which is why we're bombarded with suggestions to "eat what we want" and then take expensive meds to counter those ill effects. The fastest growing lifestyle choice is the vegan diet --and for very good reasons.
