Fat is not evil, and certainly not the only dietary element that can contribute to obesity. It is in fact essential to one's well-being (mental and physical). The single most important dietary intervention to affect weight loss is reducing portion sizes. Establish healthful habits of eating (eg. don't eat in front of the TV or in the car or when bored, only eat at a dining table). Eat what you like for "comfort food" during stressful times but limit the quantity (and address the stress-provoking circumstances).

wow... nice post docomo, I'm with you, I find reports like this worthless, and pointless, they tell you what to eat, so you go out and buy it, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a supermarket selling this to you pre made.... its basically a money scam to make you pay more for something so you can "Lose Weight"

To call this list healthy and not give one low carb option to those who find it a healthy lifestyle is being unfair. I am willing to let you low fat people say YOUR choice is healthy but give me the same courtesy. Diabetics that live VERY low carb.. live longer and have low sugar counts. Living proof here. So lady.. shouldnt you become more TOLERANT!!!!

I have to totally agree w/ docomo! Portion sizes are what most people have a problem with. Weight gain is based soley on your daily caloric intake and physical activity, not the amount of fats in your diet. The amount of fat in your diet affects other things like your cholesterol.

The problem usually isn't the food, it's the amount that people eat, and what they add to it. All of the recipes have the potential of being really fattening, if a person does not limit what he/she eats to ONE serving, or adds stuff to it to make it tastier. It's like the Subway diet...most people will gain weight eating Subway because they add mayonnaise, oil, cheese, chips, a cookie and a big soda to that basic sandwich.

If it has a voiced Z sound, then it’s “lose.” If it has a hissy S sound, then it’s “loose.” Some of you need grammar lessons in addition to direction on looooooosing weight.

Only looked at the burger recipe but if it calls for only 1 lb of beef to make 8 4 inch wide patties, I'd say it addresses the lessor portion aspect of the dieting. Assuming the other recipes do the same, I think she more than manages the balance between fat and lessor portions.

Excellent article. I think that many individuals who attempt a diet-then fail usually cut out what they feel will add to their weight issues. This article actually sets a menu and by displaying the ingredients and preparation time. In any event, the ingredients show that there is hope that weight can be lost without eating small tasteless portions.

This is helpful for some people and not helpful for others, so if you don't agree with it just shut up and keep doing whatever it is that's working for you instead of talking down on everyone else. Pretentious jerks.

Healthy is a relative term. These recipes don't necessarily address heart health and hypertension. Where's the info on sodium and cholesterol content?

Thank you, Jeff. I couldn't agree with you more. If you can't spell or have awful grammar then don't bother leaving an opinion because most people won't bother trying to decipher your poor grammar or lazy typing.

Great article for a country with fat waistlines. Didnt notice how obese our country was till I traveled to Europe and Asia. Also noticed portions were smaller and people were walking more.

I agree that portion sizes do make a big difference when trying to lose weight or just stay healthy. Just look at how much food one gets in a typical restaurant, it's enough for 2 or three people! The other problem is the amount of salt that's in our food when we go out to eat or buy prepackaged items or canned goods. It's crucial to read labels and compare companies that make the same item. For instance, a can of chick peas can vary as much as 200 mg. or more per serving depending on which brand you buy. As we al know sodium is a contributor to hypertension.

I think that the real problem is that some people do not burn off more than they put in. If you ate a piece of cheesecake, it's not big deal as long as you burn those calories off through some type of exercise. Also resistance training(which helps build muscle) helps to speed a slow metabolism. Point is ....burn more than what you take in to lose weight. Period!!!

Seriously, it doesn't take a well-educated individual to lead a healthy life. Read the nutrional facts before you buy or eat food, focus on the food pyramid that you were informed about when you were 6 years old, and try to break a sweat every day (unfortunately, that requires missing one of your favorite TV shows).

One thing I have discovered when cooking for my husband and I is that we are satified with smaller portions when the food has more flavor. You then don't want to add more salt, fat or just over eat. Adding extra spices into things helps the flavor and makes the meal more staifying. It even works for desserts. I have an ice cream maker and make our own ice cream. By adding more flavor than regular ice cream we are satified with a few bites to a small scoop instead of eating 2 large scoops or more.
