For the best mashed potatoes ever, in my opinion (I usually just make these for special occasions as they are rich and full of calories) use ranch dressing instead of milk and mix to a consistency you like.(I use the mix you add buttermilk to, the milk recipe just is not as good) Add several chopped or sliced green onions, and some crispy crumbled bacon to taste. After you mix that all up add some grated cheddar cheese and mix as little as possible to distribute the cheese throughout, but not enough so the cheese all melts into the potatoes. I started out making twice baked potatoes that way, but then got lazy and just decided to make mashed potatoes with the same ingredients. Or you can mix the ranch dressing into the potatoes, then add either nothing else, some of my ingredients, or whatever sounds good to you! (I also make my deviled eggs the same way) I prefer my mashed potatoes on the "loose" side so if you think you've got enough ranch dressing for flavor, or you don't want them any richer, then just add plain milk or buttermilk to thin. My husband, my son, and my mother ask me for these all the time!

For the olive oil mashed potatoes a better way with less calories is to skip the milk and instead after you have boiled the potatoes until tender remove from water and put in a casserole add mashed garlic and lemon juice and some olive oil and you are good to go.. Tastes really good plus you can garnish with dried mint if you like.

Another good additive to mashed potatoes is chopped pecans...or simply grate some cheese to top the mashed dish.

5 lbs of fingerling potatoes mashed with diced onions, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, cream of mushroom soup and a large tablespoon of sour cream...........omg to die for!!! I know someone will talk about calories, but if the last fork full of mashed potatoes are the only thing my hubbie and I argue about...I'm happy!!

My favorite way for Mashed potatoes is I use 2tablespoonfuls of sour cream, and butter, mash up and then use the handmixer for rich fluffy mashed potatoes. My family in upper Maine, otherwise known as potatoe country would be proud.

Nutmeg huh? hmm interesting. I use the red-skin potatoes and add sweet cream butter and sour cream, and sometimes a little garlic. My wife doesn't care too much for the garlic.

for the best mashed potatoes ; cook all or most of the water out, don't drain any off, and use hot milk.

When will restaurants in America start offering PLAIN OLD MASHED POTATOES again. I am SOOOOO sick of garlic mashed potatoes. garlic is a seasoning, not a flavor.

I put roasted garlic chicken broth in while I am cooking my potatoes(yukon gold), it adds wonderful flavor. I season with some ranch dressing mix, real butter(lots), sour cream, salt and pepper. I like mine really smooth so I use a mixer. For Thanksgiving you can cook some carrots with your potatoes and mix together for a festive add to the table. You don't have to use very many and it want change the taste of the potatoes. It comes out a pretty orange. Then, of course you can put out cheese, bacon and chives for people to add if desired. I make mashed potatoes for every family gathering.

For guilt-free mashed potatoes use the nutritious cauliflower recipe. It's extraordinary, but they really taste exactly like mashed potaoes in terms of taste and testxure with a very slight cauliflower flavor. If you're on a low-carb/South Beach diet, this is a great solution. You're not worrying about the fat (though you don't want to go overboard.) We use half & half, enough butter, and salt to taste. This is what makes it taste almost exactly like mashed potatoes.
