To answer your question yes you can use canned pumpkin it's right in the ingredients fresh or canned. I was thinking the same thing!!

Great picks! Can't wait to try the pear pie! Pineapple pie is great too. Not too many people have had it, but always like it when I fix it.

Most of you have already said it! Where, oh where, is the sweet potato pie?! I mean, if we are going to get technical, and we should, the last one can't possibly eclipse sweet potato pie!!! I agree with number 17. Most of the black folks I know like sweet potato pie and most of my white friends like pumpkin pie. However, they should've both made the list! I heard someone say once that they taste the same..which proves that there is a condition where a person doesn't have tastebuds!! (hee hee)

I prefer pumpkin over sweet potato, but I'll eat both. I make two additional pies that aren't listed....peanut butter pie and chocolate cream pie. I also make a cheesecake too.

that comment about only black people in texas eat sweet potato pie is B.S....I'm from illinois and black and eat just as much pumpkin pie as sweet potato pie...I like them both..it's amazing that in this day and age people think certain foods, clothes or anything else is exclusive to one race or another. someone earlier said check yourself....take hed...... or go to college and get yourself educated

i have to agree. i have black friends who eat pumpkin and i like sweet potato pie. but it's really silly to think that one ethnic group only eats one type of anything.

I grew up eating Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving because I didn't have a choice and I'm white. Now that I cook or buy my own, I think Sweet Potato tastes better. That being said, I agree with the earlier comment that NO WAY would pear pie beat Sweet Potato in a popularity contest. I seriously doubt that many people have a pumpkin cheesecake, either (even though it sounds OK). Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Pecan, Peach, Cherry, Apple. All of those would be at the top. Definitely not pear anything. I think the problem is that Maggie should have made the title of this article "MY Top 5 Thanksgiving Pies" because these are obviously HER favorites.

Well this list makes more sense than the top five sides. No sweet potato pie though. I would think more would chose that over pumpkin pie. Anyhow.
