During Friday's dinner rush at davidburke & donatella, I realized that I'd forgotten the birthday of a manager who's been with me a long time. He is helping me to open yet another new restaurant, and in the hustle and bustle of all of the openings and closings, I missed his birthday... which was two weeks ago.
I cut out of davidburke & donatella a little early to take him out for a belated birthday dinner. I thought I'd try my luck at BLT, only a few blocks from davidburke & donatella. Pulling a restaurateur no-no (out of sheer desperation), I walked into a busy restaurant on a Friday night without a reservation. Though BLT was packed, the manager found us a table.
Because my manager is a wine lover (and it was his birthday), I let him choose the wine. The French Burgundy he ordered went perfectly with my Kobe beef skirt steak. In fact, everything was perfect until about halfway through dinner. I was chewing on a perfectly tender bite of that steak when, somehow, I chipped my tooth--creating a nice gap right smack in the middle of my top teeth. I have no idea how it happened, but I spent the rest of dinner looking like a Lauren Hutton wannabe.
The BLT staff was all very nice about it, and though I wasn't in any pain, they brought me some soft desserts to try (which, of course, were all delicious).
Knowing I couldn't show up to davidburke & donatella the next night with a very important part of my smile missing, I called my dentist. And Dr. Eisdorfer--a davidburke & donatella regular--agreed to see me first thing Saturday morning. Thank god for regulars.
