Wines with Cool Labels

We've all done it; narrowed down our choice of Cab, Zin or Shiraz down to two tempting bottles, each vying to be brought home to be corked, carafed and enjoyed. What is the tipping point? That final selling point? The label.  Wine.com has served up their favorites designer wine labels for you to browse through.

Final Word: I'll take the Benton Lane 2005 Pinot Noir. Err, no no, maybe the Rolling 2004 Shiraz...

Average (4 Ratings): 4.5 out of 5 stars

If you want to see some cool lables on wine, go to Bully Hill Winery in Hammonsport NY. The lables all have a story,(especially) the older ones. The wine is the best in it price class, and equal to or better than wines costing twice as much! Scrooge

I'm a fan of Sterling Chardonnay and pretty much any Australian Shiraz!

For something dry but fruity try Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand). Or for a Pinot noir that's a little rough around the edges try Trinchero Family Pinot Noir (California). For a steal, try Perrin Reserve Cotes-Du-Rhone (France).

How about Chateau Morisettes "Our Dog Blue" which is a white wine, or "Black Dog" which is a Merlot ?.

Artist/illustrator Ralph Steadmans' "Cardinal Zin" is just one of several outstanding label designs he created for Bonny Doon Vineyards. My favorite however from Bonny Doon is a label called "Le Sophiste" that shows an abstract dancing tuxedo complete with cane, spats, top hat and bow tie. Instead of a foil cap over the cork; a slanted plastic top hat adorns the wine bottle to complete the label design. I also have a fondness to sequential / series labels. Each varietal from Youngs Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills has pastel drawings of harliquen clowns. In Western Australia a wine called "Fifth Leg" has a caracture engaged in a different activity each year ( in the past three years the fifth leg has been the meat on the barbie, a tank on a scuba diver and a bongo for a drummer. Lastly, Frog's Leap Winery in Napa originally had a series of labels that showed a frog leaping in sequence. The only problem was to see it you had to arrange the labels by bottle volume, .375ml,750ml,1.5L ;etc. All the labels mentioned were represented by quality wines from the wineries named.

I misunderstood the subject... anything from Peter Lehmann (Australia). All of his wines have a different artist presenting their interpretations of the wine in the bottle by painting the Queen of Clubs. The Queen represents his gamble in taking on the wine business.

I agree that Bonny Doon provides a delightful label and a fantastic wine for the price. Cardinal Zin is my favorite.

Ahhh Robert, my fellow Yahoo blogger, beware the perils of choosing wine based on good graphics...it's an important part of marketing for sure, but do those clever Yellow Tail ads make that stuff taste any better? No! Love your stuff by the way. "Girl Meets Grape" girl - BG

If your looking for a good time get a case of assorted cheap wines like Boone's Farm, Anne Green Springs, T J Swan serve very cold in large tumbers with a brown paper bag around them you will be very surprised how quickly some of the most prim and proper guests remember the days when they wern't so prim or proper ! Old records and a disco ball will also help the mood
