Has Your Kitchen Gone Bamboo Yet?

In a blink of an eye, last year's cooking silicon rage has passed, and now the red-hot material is bamboo. If you know how quickly bamboo grows, you'll understand that this is a quickly replenishable raw material, and it seems that consumers love that bamboo is just too eco-friendly and beautiful to ignore.

Here are some new ways bamboo has found its way into our kitchens:

  • Custom kitchen designer and manufacturer, Henrybuilt, offers a solid-core bamboo finish for their complete kitchen cabinet line.

  • High-end kitchen designer from Germany, Bulthaup, also offers a bamboo finish with their new B3 cabinet line.

  • For your next party, instead of the usual paper plate, try using Bambu's Veneerware disposable bamboo plates and utensils. Planning a wedding? Buy Veneerware in bulk from Joanne Hudson online.

  • Online green retailer, Vivavi, offers a great round knockdown bamboo table perfect for a breakfast nook for $250.

Another great idea for kitchen flooring is cork. Easy on the legs and a renewable resource. Available in lots of colors and patterns.

I can't remember where I saw it exactly, but I did see the bamboo plates in a store. I was completely thrilled with the idea of it, but the price had me leaving it on the store shelf. I would way rather make a guest feel special by serving them food on a plate I have to wash than pay the BIG price I saw it selling for. These are not a substitute for the paper or plastic plates, if price is taken into account. I am NOT cheap, just thrifty. I spend, but not $3.00 or so for a disposable plate!

Bamboo disposable chopsticks, disposable utensils, etc. are in common use here in Taiwan. Recently, however, it was discovered (by the Ministry of Health) that they were heavily bleached using highly toxic chemicals. The oils and water from food enabled these toxic chemicals to leach out into what was being eaten. Now, many people are trying to avoid using these disposable bamboo products and actually bring their own untensils to restaurants to use instead.

I'm from the caribbean island of Trinidad where we have a lot of bamboo. When the wind blows against themm they make a beautiful sound........makes you feel peaceful......its actually a natural high. It adds a nice tropical dimension when you put it in your houses.

To Jayfu, I looked this bamboo health hazard and it seems that the focus of the concern was using bamboo skewers to grill meats, and that the study showed soaking the skewers in water prior to grilling would get rid of the harmful chemicals. Not sure if that's a comfort, however. For more info, read http://english.www.gov.tw/TaiwanHeadlines/index.jsp?categid=10&recordid=100299
