I love to travel, and have been all over the world discovering new places, trying new things, and meeting new people. There's just one thing I don't like about traveling -- actually getting to wherever I'm going. Because no matter where I'm traveling or what airline I'm on, food is an issue.
Fortunately though, it's easy to pack simple but satisfying snacks that will get you through even the longest flight.
For short trips, easy-to-transport sweet treats like scones or cinnamon buns are the way to go. Just wrap them in plastic wrap and toss them in your bag for a perfect little snack.
For longer trips, you'll want to bring something more substantial. Couscous is the perfect dish -- it's filling but light, and works great with lots of different flavors. Many ethnic foods -- think samosas, pierogi, and empanadas -- are also great choices, because they're just as tasty at room temperature as they are warm. All you need is a little side of sauce to dip them in. You can also go the more traditional route and pack a sandwich, but I'd advise staying away from fillings that are too creamy, because you'll end up with a mushy mess. Instead, try thin slices of chicken brushed with pesto and hard cheese on rye bread. Salads that taste best at room temperature are another good bet. Try orzo tossed with pesto or tomato vinaigrette, or even a chicken-orzo salad with tomatoes.
The Department of Homeland Security does restrict certain foods, so be sure to check out their Web site before packing for your trip.
Happy travels!
