Extra virgin oil is not really expensive if you know where to buy. I buy mine at Cotco, a membership based upscale discount warehouse store. OIl oil over there is about 40 to 50% cheaper.

Good info, but I thought it also has its negative side too. I heard that if you heat up olive oil too high (e.g. to fry food), it produces chemical that causes cancer.

Since the vitamins are 'heat sensitive' - does this mean the benefits no longer apply if we are cooking with it? Are the benefits there for the taking only when ingested raw? Anyone??

Does that mean we should take shots of Olive Oil? Sure it is the best oil but we need limits. I saw an American Idol contestant take a shot of olive oil before singing. I wonder if overdose is possible.
One should also note that if you cook with olive oil it is far better than any other oils, but once it reaches a certain heat the essential nutrients are lessened. This is however a far better alternative to cooking with canola or vegetable oil or worse. Microwaving also destroys most of the health of olive oils. For the most healthy look for First Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil and incorporate it as the main ingredient to a great salad dressing.

Olive oil is so worth the extra cost! My husband and I haven't used any other kind of oil for over 3 years now, and my husband's cholesterol has gone down considerably. We buy our EVOO at costco.
