3 simple tips for losing weight

Go to sleep. Getting enough sleep every night keeps you thin. Why? When your body doesn't get the 7 to 8 hours it needs every night, it doesn't get a full resupply of serotonin and dopamine, two feel-good brain chemicals it craves. So it looks for ways to replenish them, and guess what immediately releases both in the body: sugary foods. That's why when you're tired, you start craving sweets! So tuck yourself in early and stay slim.

Keep your hands full. You'd think that sitting around playing video games, solitaire, or surfing around Yahoo! would be an invitation to putting on pounds. Nope. When your fingers are flying, they're not knuckle-deep in a bowl of chips. Now that's not to say that endless hours on your duff are good for anybody's waistline, but when you keep your hands and brain occupied, you're not reaching automatically for something to eat. In fact, you're probably not even thinking about food. So the next time you start to open the fridge door, turn on the computer, or pick up your knitting, instead.

Pick and stick. Yeah, sure, variety may be the spice of life. But it can also be the death of dieting. When you have a lot of choices for a meal, it's a lot easier to slip out of good eating habits and into buffet binges. One way to avoid trouble is to eliminate choices for at least one meal a day. Pick the meal you rush through most and automate it. For most people, that's lunch. Find a healthy lunch - maybe salad with grilled chicken or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread - and have it for lunch every day. Every day. Yes, every day. The less you think about food, the easier it is to control you appetite. And decreasing choices decreases temptations.

All three tips are from two weight-loss experts: RealAge superdocs Michael Roizen, MD, and Mehmet Oz, MD, authors of the huge bestseller, YOU: On a Diet.

No you do not. I have been watching what I eat without working out and I have lost about 30 pounds in 3 months. So, working out do help, but if you do not have time for that, just watch what you put in your body and you will see the difference.

I was 150 pounds and I got down to 115 by drinking only water, no snacks, no desserts and moderate portions. I had no time to exercise. However, exercize is very ideal becuase it tones what you lose instead of saggy, baggy skin! exercize will also deffinately speed up the process!

I believe that you have to do moderate exercises(at least 30 minutes daily), eat low glycemic index foods e.g whole grains....and take high quality supplements to stay healthy. See my website www.usanaforeveryone.usana.com Grace

Portion control is key. Most of us eat way more than we think we do because the portion is too big. Switching to eating things that are portion controlled like a lean cuisine meal helps train you body to eat less and that's how you can do it without working out.

Its all in moderation. Eat 5 times a day but small amounts. Lastly, workout and walk, walk, walk, walk.

I find that eating on sandwich size plate as opposed to full sized dinner plate helps tremendously with portion control.

You can easily lose weight by keeping the right diet, but you'll eventually hit a point where you can't lose any more (example: you've still got the spare tires). This is when exercize will do the most. (everyone should exercize anyways (you're all lazy fools!))

You may lose a noticeable amount of weight in a short amount of time by watching what you eat, regulating your portions and not exercising, BUT, 2/3 of each pound that you lose will be muscle mass. Only 1/3 will be body fat. Just something for you to think about....

also when eating lunch or dinner, use smaller plates. This cuts down on the amount of food you eat, but also tricks your brain in a way. Try it for yourself. It really helps when you want to see results fast.

I think the most important issue is being healthy. That's why we should try to eat what's better for us and at the same we MUST do exercise. You'd be surprised to know how good it feels to change your lifestyle for better.

just eat the subway diet like Jared. worked great for him. i eat a variety of fruits for breakfast, drink only water, a salad and half sandwich for lunch, and some type of grilled fish or chicken for dinner. i walk one mile at a fast pace in the morning before i eat to get my metabolism going, i do fifty sit ups that help keep the spare tire off and i keep snack foods away so i'm not tempted when i'm just sitting. dont eat in the car, thats a bad habbit to get into. i lost 75 pounds in 9 months doing these easy things. you can too. good luck.

When you go out for dinner to a restaurant that serves large portions, I get a 'to-go' box and put half or more of my meal in it, then enjoy the rest. Whaddayaknow! There's tomorrow's lunch!

I must say that exercise alone will cause you to lose weight. After having extra pregnancy weight, I began to walk and take aerobic classes 4 times a week...after 10 weeks, I have lost 3% body fat but NO weight, and trust me, I have it to lose!!! After talking with a nutritionist, I realized that even though what I am eating is considered healthy, my main problem was portion control. So I have to agree with mdancrw...we as a society often eat too much food at a given meal. Average servings at restaurants are 2 times what we should eat, but we have been eating more that needed for so long, we feel we need it to be "full". I feel that is another problem, we eat until we get too full, not satisfied. Hopefully my recent changes, ALONG with the exercising will help me lose weight.

Loosing weight is an issue that we all will deal with in our lives. I do agree, if you sleep well, eat healthy snacks, and exercize will help you loose weight. Further more, I think It's something that must happen gradually. If it happens too quickly, we run the risk of bein unhealthy and putting it back too quickly. I have come to learn that, eating regular balanced meals, having fun and being active is the key to loosing weight.

Try what I did. Take 5 minutes to make up a spreadsheet tracking hours of sleep, calories in (what you eat), and calories out (any activities that burn calories) every day. It would be beneficial to use a reference point, such as 2200 calories/day or 8 hours of sleep to gauge how well you are doing. Set up a graph for your sleep habits and another one for your calorie habits. After about three weeks, add a trendline to the data. YOU WILL SEE WHY YOU ARE FAT. Exercise has very little to do with it. Essentially, all you have to do is reverse the curve to lose weight and keep it off. You will see when you overeat and that should help you gauge what causes it. Everyone had good suggestions. Brian S. should reference his bold statements, though
