Sometimes it's not that the parent doesn't feed the child breakfast. My 14 year-old will not eat breakfast if I don't make him, and then I'm lucky to get him to eat a piece of jelly toast. My other 2 children (ages 8 & 9) eat breakfast every morning, usually oatmeal or waffles, sometimes cold cereal with 2% milk. I round it off with Ovaltine chocolate 2% milk for the vitamins. If I could get my oldest to eat, he might do better in school, but it is like pulling teeth. Do you want him to go to school having eating something but in a foul mood because Mom had to fight with him to get him to eat, or with little or no breakfast and in a good mood? Remember, he is 14 and in 8th grade. Middle school sucks, and he needs all the good moods I can give him.

I think these are great suggestions (emphasize suggestions). There are lots of data that support the linking of cognitive performance and emotional stability with breakfast in kids, especially healthy breakfasts. Here's a BBC article referencing a now well-known study of a school population in the UK where children were supplemented with fish oil in their diets. http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/articles/intelligenceandmemory/omega_three.shtml
There's also evidence that healthier breakfast eaters are less likely to become obese. I think the point of this post is to raise awareness and give some ideas to parents who may be in need of a little of either or both! We all could use a little help raising our kids.

I just don't have time to eat breakfast. I stay up later (because I can't get to sleep, in bed by midnight) and wake up around 6:45, and have 10 minutes to get ready before the bus comes. So there is no time for breakfast at all. Won't eat a big lunch either, because I'm not that hungry, but I will eat a big dinner. Which porbably isn't healthy.

Oatmeal is a great way to start off that day, and i is quick and easy to make and kids love it when you put cinnamon on top of oatmeal, it makes it more appealing and adds sweetness without the harm of sugar. Also, Cinnamon has a natural ingredient that balances your blood sugar and is beneficial to those who suffer from heartburn and chronic indigestion. So throw some cinnamon on that oatmeal, it could save you pain later on! One more thing, oatmeal is proven to lower your cholesterol if you eat it everyday for 30 days. If you eat it everyday continuosly, you will increase your chances of living a healthier life!

How can you get your 15 going on 16 year old to eat breakfast before school? Both of my boys used to eat breakfast in the mornings up until they began high school. Is this okay?
I'm just so tired and stressed every morning before school that when I eat it bothers my stomach. I usually scarf something down anyways, but I really wish school would start later to cater to the sleep cycle of teens better. It doesn't make sense that the lower the grade the later school starts. High schoolers have a much harder time getting up early. The school board only does this in order to stagger the bus schedules. They don't even see the harm they are doing.

My 11yr old says her stomach hurts if she eats breakfast. I try to keep something in the pantry for her at all times but she just will not eat in the mornings.

My son wont eat in the morning, so I make him (in the winter) hot chocolate with low fat milk and nesquik, which has calcium. This doesnt fill him up and it tastes great! Plus it has protein and LOTS of calcium.

A tasty way to make sure my son and daughter get protein, fiber, and oats in the morning are homemade energy bars. I make 'em from Matisse & Jack's mix:

Oatmeal is the best for Kids. You don't need to force kids to eat--simply show them a good example, yourself. Breakfast is a must. No questions. Tell your child/children: eat breakfast, I love you have a wonderful day. Mixing raisins, dried cherries, bannas, apples, nuts and the like into the oatmeal is very yummy. And honey, soy milk; foods your child likes. Don't feed your child fake food. Don't be a lazy parent! Show your child you care enough to prepare a simple healthy breakfast --- that means alot to a child. And, yes, you're the parent-the child eats before school. Period.

If you or your kid are not hungry for breakfast in the morning, it might be because you had a late meal or snack the night before. I was doing it a lot when I was in school - having a large dinner late, and then not being hungry for breakfast and lunch the day after. This eating pattern made me less concentrated and less happy at school, and it also made me gain weight.

As a high school student I didn't eat breakfast for 4 years, it was too early and I always felt ill trying to force food into my stomach. I did however, carry a nutri-grain bar with me for when I finally did feel hungry (2nd period?).
As a former teacher, often children would come into my classroom having not eaten breakfast in the morning. I kept a box of graham crackers and a box of granola bars in my desk for just those occasions. Skipping breakfast is far more detrimental at an early age....

When it comes to breakfast I'm the only one in the house that loves breakfast. I make the kids eat at least a slice of whole wheat toast and a glass of juice or milk at the minimum. I could care less if they get moody with me, since I know that as soon as they see their friends, it's all forgotten but the breakfast carries them until lunch. I also make sure they have dinner by no later than 6:30pm. It's tough but I accepted these responsibilities when I chose to be a parent.
