Foods That Fight Afternoon Slumps

When the afternoon blahs leave you slumped over your desk like an unwatered house plant, most of us reach for a supersized vat of coffee and/or a calorie-packed sugar snack. There are much better options, whether you need a quick lift to keep you from nodding out in a meeting or something to keep you going for hours.

WATER Sometimes what feels like fatigue is just dehydration (often made worse by too much coffee). Drink 8 ounces of water, take a quick walk around the block or the parking lot (fresh air is an energy booster, too), then down another 8 ounces when you get back.

BRAZIL NUTS They're off the charts in mood-lifting selenium and strong in fatigue-fighting magnesium too. Just 6 give you 4 grams of protein and healthy plant fats, a combo that will keep you going far longer than you'd think.

A MEXICAN BAKED POTATO Spuds are high on the glycemic index - that is, they give blood sugar a quick boost - which is bad for diabetics but good in moderate doses for other people in need of an energy surge. Heap on some salsa and top with a dollop of low-fat sour cream to enhance the effect. Spicy foods are stimulating, and hot peppers wake up more than your tastebuds.

A FEW DRIED DATES They were traditionally used in the Sahara to provide quick energy to camels. Like potatoes, they're a high glycemic snack, but rich in minerals too, especially potassium. Split the dates and fill with a tad of low-fat cream cheese to slow the sugar absorption.

PB&J ON WHOLE WHEAT The all-American sandwich is also an all-round pick-me-up, thanks to its amazingly complete mix of carbs, good fats, protein, and whole-grain fiber. Just make it a one-slice foldover to cut the calories down to about 200. (For more on how good whole grains are for you - they even make your RealAge younger - take this mini quiz.)

I'm looking for information that recognizes that men eat different than women. There's lots of empiricle evidence for this but not much scientific research. I think this has practical applications for advising men and women how to eat to stay healthy.

When colleagues get all worked up or seem to nod off in meetings, I always suggest a stretch break to improve circulation and morale. Everyone is usually smiling at the end of the break. They are ready to move on with less hostility or others are more alert and willing to get the matters-on-hand completed.

I think the best way is lowering the working day to 6 hours and starting in a morning not earlier than 8, that will keep us fresh, and not sleepy at work and also give us more time to see our family

My son has been eating a handful of dates before his hockey practices and games, and making sure that he is hydrated. We've noticed a big difference in his energy level and his endurance on the ice.

fyi selenium can cause serious health drawbacks such as loss of hair+fingernails, and in a longer run: liver complications, and cancer. no reputable studies to date have proven it as a mood enhancer. It is idiocy to tout attributes in a food that aren't there, to a community of people who may actually follow your advice.

Sleep apnea is also a cause for afternoon slumps and low energy. I suggest if you snore or wake gasping during sleep you have a sleep study done. People find they have an "abundant" amount of energy if they use a Cpap machine for sleeping. It's amazing how much more energy you'll experience all day long plus it helps to eliminate risk of heart disease, depression and many other health issues.

Every day at 3:00 I get the cravings. I drink water all day so I enjoy my almonds or shelled peanuts. I also have clementines or grapes. If I need carbs I have pretzels dipped in hummus. Having lost 75 pounds it is important to eat healthy and not feel deprived. It is a lifestyle change!

8 hour days? What are those? I haven't worked an 8 hour day for 7 years, Ive been stuck on 12 hour shifts and working nights. I found the best thing to do is take a walk. I usually go out for a walk around the building around 3am and that gets me going again. Caffeine and sugar never helped

A handful of tropical trail mix and green tea is always a great thing to keep on hand. It's getting late here @ work, and I just realized I'm out. But I do recommend it to anyone wanting something quick and portable.

Nothing fights afternoon slumps better than a tight deadline and a busy schedule - if your project is due tomorrow you'll be working like Japanese beaver without metrosexual foods like low fat cheese cream stuffed dried dates.

alot of the time it really is dehydration. Having water and getting some fresh air does wonders. Also, many of ppl don't eat enough fruit and veggies....amazing what adding it into your day does.

I especially liked the idea of 8 ounces of water - walk around the block - and down another 8 ounces of water. What this doesn't take into account is: 1) if you're an employee, you can't just take a break when ever you want to have a walk around the block. 2) if it was me downing 8 ounces of water, I wouldn't get even to the next corner, never mind around the block. I'd be spending the next half an hour in and out of the toilet; and if I down another 8 ounces afterwards, my boss would say he doesn't pay me to waste half a day at the WC. 3) the walking is also meant to get some fresh air; that you could rectify by opening the windows a bit; even in winter time you can do this at least once every while for a few minutes. Most important though: stop overheating an office - that'll prevent dehydration as well. Then you don't have to down 16 ounces of water and afterwards spend the rest of the day at the toilet.
