You have to be a naive fool to believe the FDA. They are the ones who allow the food manufacturers to mislead people by claiming "0 grams trans fat" on their packaging, when indeed, trans fat less than .5 grams IS in there. (Since when does 0 grams equal .5 grams?) Yes, a minute amount, perhaps, BUT it is still a blatant lie. And it adds up. Your body cannot break down trans fats through good diet and/or exercise. They continue to collect in your body, and are deadly. The FDA doesn't care about you, and neither do most of the companies that are taking advantage of this little glitch. Trans fats kill people every day. Your government allows it to continue by allowing food manufacturers to lie on their packaging. Please look for the words "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" in the ingredient list (not the front of the package). If you see either of those phrases, then your product has them in it. No, I'm not a dietician. But I've educated myself on the subject, AND I want to be around to see my grandchildren. Don't believe everything you hear.

people just dont realize like 90% of the time WHAT they are putting in their mouths... and then they wonder why they are overweight!!! if only they read more useful articles like this and heeded the advice maybe then they'd realize or have a CLUE!!!

Grow your own food, then there are no labels except the one you put on the jar you canned. There are some products we cannot grow-but we know how to read, and we comprehend the @@**!! manufacturers try to feed us. We are all being lulled into the world of "let someone else take care of me". WAKE UP and let these label writers know we are not stupid and are not fooled by so-called healthy food.

Since you want to nitpick, Firehorse, Andreas' comment is #8...
C'mon - let's stop being so petty. Just read the article, and if it helps you, it helps you. 'Nuff said...

It takes time and can be confusing, but really read the labels on all foods and drinks--know what you are going to put in your body--your health depends on it.

really, it is not that hard to read a label; it's not that hard to figure out the servings per container and serving sizes; i think the only thing that's worth anything in this article is the fact that the "zero" doesn't always mean "none"

I've always said "serves 8" means 8 parakeets I ignore the labels, except when scanning for bht (cause its the only real baddie I remember) I dont eat much prepackaged crap anyway. (Just the aforementioned oreos and a few others)

It seems that most agree that many companies are dishonest at best and as exploiting the consumer becomes more vicious like these gas prices, Perhaps we should pay alittle attention to knowing the true cost of any product we buy. If you think the labels are misleading, I assure you that the marketing that goes into obscurring the true cost is far worse. And, by not paying attention to that will cost you more every time you buy anything without knowing the true cost. Here is a easy one anybody can use. Best used in groceries stores, super stores like wal-mart as well. The Unit Cost.
Always knowing the Unit Cost will always guarantee best price.
Here's how it works.
The unit cost is any product sold buy the most common denominator of that product. For Example; if a bag of Regular Chips O'Hoy Chocolate Chip Cookies cost 3.52 for a 16oz. size bag, that means the unit cost is .22 cents per ounce.
Most of us look at the final price.
The store business is to know that's what we do. Me too.
Now let's say right next to the regular chips o'hoy @ 3.52 is a "New" Extra Chunky Chip on "Special Sale" for 3.17 a bag.
Most would think well that's a 10%saving and a new product. We saved .35 cents.
now the truth........
The New Chunky Chips cost more than the regular chips.
How can that be ?
Here's how.
The New Chips are in a 12.5 ounce bag
which makes them .2536 cents per ounce. That means you paid 15% more based on the true unit cost and you received 28% less cookies. There are many variations of this, but this is a mathematical fact. store are supposed to have unit prices displayed, but many do not, or if they do, they make it impossible to decipher. No Store wants anyone to have this tool. It is foolproof for knowing the true cost. I have many more ways that I would be happy to share for free of course to anyone who emails me........
good luck
things are gonna get much worse.
there is help ......
ask me.
