It's great to talk about eating fresh fruit, lean meats and vegetables untill you see how much incredibly more expensive it is to eat healthy, the amount of money my wife and I spend on eating healthy is amazing.

Unfortunately, it is just WRONG about potatoes. The starch in potatos is too simple a carbohydrate, it is broken down into glucose almost as fast as cane sugar. So no, it is not a good starch. Neither is white bread, for that matter. Carbohydrates should be complex, as in whole wheat or basmati rice, and only lightly-milled, NOT find-ground. Then the conversion proces into blood glucose is slow and orderly, which is the best way to do it on a diet.

what costs more, the amount of medicine purchased on making yourself feel better after eating all the junk food or dropping more than 5 bucks on each meal? Add up all the pills, sodas, cappuccinos, candy, snacks, smokes and other consumables then eat healthy for a day, you'll be surprised! Plus if everyone would start eating better our health care system might be worth something.

I've lost 32 lbs. by controlling portion sizes, not depriving myself of foods I like, just eating them in moderation, and instead of driving 5 blocks to the store I put the baby in the stroller and take a walk, theres plenty room for groceries, the baby enjoys it, I have to go there anyway, and i just got my exercise. Also one big thing, keep a water bottle by you at all times, when your bored have a drink, kinda hungry have a drink. I found out I usually eat out of boredom, keep your self occupied!!

As a postmenopausal woman who gained 8 lbs over the past 9 years, with NO significant changes in my diet or exercise (other than eating a lot healthier and actually exercising more), I would definitely have to say it is due to metabolism shift ....at least for me...and I think I know my body best...I live in it. THAT is not a myth! I eat healthy, execise regularly - and embrace my 8 extra pounds as well deserved. I have made peace with and am quite happy with my healthy 'womanly' (as opposed to girlish) figure!

People are Stupid!!! Enough Said. I feel dumb just posting a reply to this ignorant blog. When are people going to realize what kind of world they live in. Do you really need somebody to tell you what foods to eat and how much to eat? You were taught in 3rd grade the food pyramid. Try combining some basic knowledge about food with some exercise. That's right, get your dumba** off the couch and actually do something other than watch TV, you pathetic losers. Add that to some common sense and you know what that equals? Nothing! Because most people are just plain IDIOTS! Get It? I doubt it because you people are Ignorant!!!!

If the food is a processed product like "whole grain breads" or is a vegatable that you can't eat raw like potatoes, it's bad for you.....If it's made or modified by man, don't eat it.....

In response to the question about diabetics I don't believe this article is suggesting that the mentioned facts and foods are better for diabetics only in regards to a diet for losing weight and general health.I am a diabetic but even if I weren't obviously diet{sugar-free} soda is better than regular as far as sugar content. Also the bread and starch thing, yes the body converts starch to sugar so... I think this was a good, informative and clear - cut article, but thanks for pointing those things out we wouldn't want anybody misinterpreting something and getting sick. I have had many debates with people regatding a few of the thingd mentioned so thanks for helping me clear those up once and for all!

    1. It's not a myth! Too many carbs will lead to insulin resistance for many people. Too much insulin will lead to fat gain, especially around the middle. 2. Sometimes people feel hungry although they are thirsty. Drinking a glass of water can make hunger pangs go away. 3. Yay! Shellfish, unless you don't believe in eating bottom feeders... 4. Unless the burger meat is infected with mad cow disease! Trans fat from french fries fried in vegetable oil is probably the worst thing you could ever eat and clogs your cell membranes..exercise afterwards won't change how your cell membranes function 5. Well, I hate to say it, but with the sudden drop in estrogen, the body will try to balance this with extra fat. Belly fat produces more estrogen...so a little bit extra is actually healthy at this age, but not too much. 6. Stay away from diet and regular soda. Period. ? Should I reduce my alcohol intake? NO. Not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

I have been 110 lbs and i have been 225 lbs.and not just when pregnant! I have tried many, many diets and for me the best thing is to eat as much and as often as i want but substitute things for what i used to eat. There are many low-fat, low cal,low carb foods that satisfy cravings and make for an enjoyable filling meal. For me a low fat diet works and I eat candy, muffins and breads, frozen yogurt and ice cream, of course i eat lots of salad and veggies too and I bake my meats and my fries! I use I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT BUTTER SPRAY on everything. I ALSO FIND CANDY,PUDDING,ICE CREAM THAT IS LOW FAT OR FAT FREE. I HAVE TO WATCH MY SUGAR CAUSE I'M DIABETIC but if you aren't - there is plenty of good stuff you can buy or learn to make and you can pretty much live without feeling like you are going without{ if you know what I mean}. You have to change the way you eat forever but it can be done. I'm proof. I've gone from a size 20 to a size 10-12. Sometimes I can eat alittle richer food if I eat less fat grams all day. I even went to Golden Corral on my birthday! I JUST ATE CAUTIOUSLY THE REST OF THE DAY.CHECK OUT SOME LOW FAT RECIPES AND LEARN HOW MANY FAT GRAMS IS YOUR DAILY INTAKE FOR LOSING WEIGHT. I TRY TO STAY UNDER 50 BUT I'M AT A TOUGH SPOT RIGHT NOW. You can lose weight really quickly and keep it off if you do it right. Even as far as exercise goes just do some leg lifts, sit- ups or crunches, swimming is great too. Works for me everytime! I'm never hungry or craving what I shouldn't eat.I'm 48 and look great {according to everyone who knows me}, so I am abit experienced. Also it's not expensive and you just buy the things you like but in the low fat or fat free version.Potatoe chips buy the baked ones, etc..
