chelester is correct chickpeas are not fat free (but they are very low in fat) 1 oz of chickpeas has 46 cals and 1 g of fat they are used in hummus which is a very yummy low cal/fat snack

It's not the fat and calories that most concern me at salad bars (from which I never partake). It's the cleanliness of the food preparers and the the food itself that is the biggest danger. For those of us who are accustomed to washing fruits and veggies with soap and water, the tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers etc. in the salad bar are repulsive. Q: Has anyone ever seen someone sneeze or cough at a salad bar. Yuk.

I've never heard cottage cheese is bad, but then again I only buy the fat free kind. High protein, low carbs, no fat = perfect diet food. Yet they tell you to skip it at the salad bar, but then say you can have it at the fruit salad bar? That makes no sense. If it's ok at one, it should be ok at the other. By the way, 'California' I'm pretty sure most salad bars I've ever been too don't carry organic iceberg lettuce. Organic = dumb. It's a scam people.

So, I should eat all the things I can't stand and avoid all the things I like so that I can live longer? If so, why would I want to? What a bunch of idiots.

Should have mentioned onions!! red onions are the best, and alliums pack antimicrobial/bacteria fighting power. Eggs & raw mushrooms are scary bar foods and avoid the fakey bacon bits!! yuko..Top of the line salad bars have baby spinach, mesclun-mix and romaine-good stuff

Chelester is right. Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) are not fat-free. Cooked chickpeas get about 7% of their calories from fat (unlike kidney beans, which get about 1% of their calories from fat).

Maybe you should skip the tomatoes for a few weeks at this time. True, they contain Lycopine, but they also contain contaminents from field works, who do their business in in tomato fields, while on a break

stupid article......who makes up the calorie count anyway? Moderation is the key. It always has been and always will be. Who really knows what's organic and what isn't? Just because "they" say so. Pass me the fat free dressing and let my consious be my guide. I'll take my steak medium rare........thanks.

To Shakeena: Italian dressing is just as bad for you as any other dressing. Try the spray bottle by Wishbone.

Knightdancer, I am a vegetarian but couldn't agree with your comment more. I cannot stand people who act like the food police. I too would rather live less but greater years than more but miserable years.

One thing to remember is it's all about portion size. Salads are no longer conducive to losing weight when you make 3 trips to the bar.

The author is awfully exited about eating rabbit food. What happened to a t-bone, baked potato and a side salad? Man was meant to eat meat ask the cavemen, thats why fire was invented.

That's the thing with salad bars, you can make 'em super healthy, or make yourself THINK you're eating super healthy. Zoopa is the best salad bar around, although there aren't too many anymore. But be careful there because along with the salad bar, you get a pasta bar, a bread bar and a dessert bar! You never leave hungry when you eat there!

All sensible points with the exception of cottage cheese being high in saturated fat. Nonsense, it's by far the least fattening cheese even at the regular 4%. http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Cottage-Cheese-Is-The-Healthy-Cheese&id=401023
