I have been on Diet Coke since it appeared. I am a healthy 61 year old and have had no side effects. I believe that it all depends on how much you drink and if it is the only thing you drink. Everyone must use there own judgement in this as well as other things you ingest.

Fat people drink diet pop, aspartame is awful for you. Eat and drink organic foods and drinks. You will be happier and look way better, stop being fat, get off the diet craze.

I drink Diet Coke but no where near a gallon a day!! I drink maybe 2 -12 oz cans a day. For those who worry about caffiene, THERE IS CAFFIENE FREE DIET COKE!!. Sound like some of the posters are dooms day predictors and some who can't control themselves and over indulge (type A personalities).

Aspartame (aka "Nutra"-Sweet) was NOT approved for over 16 years by the Food and Drug Administration until a certain Donald Rumsfeld because CEO of GD Searle, the manufacturer of Nutra-Sweet. I have patients who get migraines when consuming foods or liquids containing aspartame, and one in particular who will have seizures from aspartame.
I have no doubt that aspartame is harmful to the nervous system.

It's interesting how studies supported by the companies that make aspartame debunk the studies that show how bad aspartame is to the body. Studies have shown that aspartame actually creates a feeling of hunger. Most of the skinny people I know drink water because that's what the body is made of. I see too many fat people drinking diet sodas thinking they are doing some good. A healthy diet of fresh whole foods and water, even juice is what your body is made of, not chemicals contained in sodas, even diet sodas.

Sounds to me like the writer is shilling for Diet Coke. Was she a plant from the Coca-Cola Corporation? According to this there is no downside - despite the "a big maybe" to the idea that DC may cause cancer - to drinking this stuff.
Soda is water and a bunch of crappy chemicals, some with a ton of sugar as well. Why are we such sheep that we enrich these companies selling stuff that's not good for us, and continue pouring liquid crap down our throats?

I live on the stuff. Diet Coke is the best. Believe me if it was deadly I would of been dead along time ago. I drink diet coke from the time I get up until I go to bed. I very seldom drink anything else.

I love Diet Coke, but aspartame makes you crave carbs. Besides personal experience, it was in the congressional hearings on whether to approve it for public use. I know that the less I drink, the easier I can lose weight. Its not just a coincidence that you see a lot of large people drinking this stuff.

I'm so confused, so is it better to drink regular coke when you just have to have a soda? I don't keep the stuff in my house but when I do have a craving for a sweet bubbly drink I try to get diet..thought I was being healthy..but now I'm not so sure...

Tell em like it is Chris. Im also a diabetic goin on 13 years and also have drank Diet Coke since being diagnosed. The sad part with the majority of your comments are is that it is pretty much bad to eat or drink anything in todays world. Yet we all still do. Its just the way life is, you do it and you keep on going. As for people being fat and drinking it, EXERCISE and you won't be fat, live a little healthier and you will feel and look a whole lot better. Get over your preconceived notions and conspiracy theories, constant whining and just live your life.

I've also been told that aspartame is a form of formeldahide. (not sure I spelled that right) and that IF it were to get hot enough that that's exactly what the aspartame turns into. I remember a news story from way back when a bunch of american soldiers overseas got really sick in result of the soda's getting to hot. Myth or fact?

I am caffine free and therefore aspertame free for 3 weeks now. I feel really good and have lost a few pounds. I think that drinking diet soda, even though I am reducing my sugar and calorie intake, causes my stomach to expand. Then when I eat food, my stomach is not satified until it is expanded to the volume that a buch of soda takes up. I find i am getting full easier and therefore eating less.

Cool, I'll stop drinking water, Yahoo !
by the way , was this written by Coca-Cola Company, haha ? ah no... it says... Real Age. Just drink water, you'll save a lot (in every sense)

I drink Diet Coke in moderation, and I love the stuff. I find it interesting that diet sodas have become the "new smoking". Everywhere I go people feel obligated to tell me it's bad for me. I have a new sympathy for smokers.
must of been written by a coca-cola stock holder. the stuff can make you ill. I drank 3 times a day for a year and finally quit. It does have someting in it that makes you ill. I feel much better not drinking it.

WHAT A B.S. ARTICLE! I can't believe it is so one-sided about aspartame! I'm glad a lot of you below see right thru this article and understand that too much of anything artificial isn't good for anyone. Like others have said, research the side-effects of aspartame for yourself before taking this ONE article to justify drinking diet sodas....especially in access. Most people (including myself just 2 years ago) drank at least 4+ diet sodas a day. How much do you want to bet these chemists & researchers on Diet Cokes payroll!!!?????

We use rats because they are cheap, not because they are close to humans. And even humans have different reactions to drugs, eg lipitor.
Oh, by the way, all that cholesterol stuff is a scam. Studies show that people who take one aspirin a day have the same rate of heart disease as those who take cholesterol drugs.

To those "Anti" Diet coke people, bring on the facts. Statements like, "it is widely known that the ingredients in diet coke are so unhealthy" don't hold a lick of credibility. Or, "just Google the ingredients", how ridiculus is that. I can Google "gasoline ingestion" and probably find an article that says it clears acne.
If you don't like it, don't drink it. I drink Diet Coke because I actually like the taste. If you are going to stay away from something stay away from drinks that contain High Fructose Corn Syrup (Google that one).

You do not even have a clue what you are talking about. Soft drinks are very hazardous to your health. Fact #1: They are mostly chemical. Fact #2: The high acid content 2.0-2.5 causes arthritis! Fact #3: They are extremely dehydrating to the body contributing to high sugar levels in the blood. Fact # 4: They constrict the blood vessels which, in conjunction with smoking, can cause migraine headaches. fact #5. The dehydration can cause attention problems in children. (ADHD?). Tell the truth or do better research. The soft drink companies will be held accountable one day just like the tobacco industry! Do you remember when they used to say things 4 out of 5 doctors recommend a certain brand of cigarettes? If you go to medical articles or FDA reports for your information it's like going to mechanic to fix your computer! Nutrition is a serious business so act like it. My children and grandchildren are not allowed to drink soft drinks in my home because I love them too much.

I wonder how many of you who say Diet Coke is bad for you drink beer and other forms of alcohol.
Diet Coke is fine.....in moderation.....like most things.

It's interesting that this article starts with "Diet Coke, the best-selling sugar-free soft drink in
the country" kinda sounds like a commercial. Hmmmm who do you think wrote this?
