Is Diet Soda Really Bad for You?

Posted Thu, Jan 17, 2008, 10:56 am PST
POST A COMMENT »

Diet Coke--the best-selling sugar-free soft drink in the country--has spawned a cult-like following among Americans. Some even swear they’re addicted to the stuff. But rumors abound about the drink’s health effects, some blatantly false and some surprisingly true. Can you separate fact from urban legend?

1. People have grown deathly ill from drinking cans of Diet Coke with dirty tops.

Myth. Legend has it that the lethal hantavirus spreads to humans when they drink soda contaminated by the droppings of warehouse rats or mice. True, humans can catch hantavirus from rodent waste bur there are no known cases of a person getting it from unclean Diet Coke cans (or any food packaging). Still, it’s a good idea to wipe icky stuff off your top before popping it.

2. Diet Coke is 99% water.

Fact. One Diet Coke ad actually brags about this. The marketing strategy behind the ad hinges on the idea that anything that is mostly water can’t be bad for you. (Not true. Insecticides are often mostly water.) What’s important is what makes up that other 1%.

3. Diet Coke’s sweetener was developed as an ant poison and is therefore hazardous.

Myth. Aspartame, the artificial sweetener in Diet Coke, was created by a chemist working on an ulcer drug. The compound doesn’t kill ants or short-circuit their nervous systems, as legend has it. Even if those things were true, they wouldn’t prove that aspartame is dangerous to humans, since many products that aren’t toxic to us (like black pepper) repel ants.

4. Diet Coke exacerbates arthritis.

Myth. In fact, the aspartame in Diet Coke may actually ease arthritis! Studies of people with osteoarthritis or a mix of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis found that aspartame relieved their pain and helped their joints move more fluidly. (Note: The studies weren’t done specifically with Diet Coke.)

5. Drinking Diet Coke while eating Mentos candies can create a mildly explosive reaction in your body.

Fact! Luckily, you can’t consume enough to cause a major internal eruption. Yet some very sticky people have had a wild and crazy time creating geysers that shoot over 10 feet high, including a mini-version of the Las Vegas Bellagio fountains that involved hundreds of candies and 200 liters of Diet Coke (we’re not kidding). How does it work? Certain types of Mentos have a microscopically rough surface that, when combined with the carbon dioxide in Diet Coke (or any soda), seems to create an insane number of bubbles. Pressure builds FAST and boom! Watch it happen.

6. Drinking Diet Coke can cause or worsen multiple sclerosis symptoms.

Myth. The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has debunked this falsehood, as have the FDA and other organizations. The notion that Diet Coke can cause neurological disorders may be based on an observation by the Centers for Disease Control years ago, that in some people, aspartame seemed linked to mild neurological problems, such as headaches and moodiness. However, the CDC found that these symptoms are mild and affect most people, not just diet soda drinkers.

7. Diet Coke isn’t 0 calorie.

Myth. Contrary to Web rumors, Diet Coke does not have 40 or more calories, and the company does not get to call its drink calorie-free in exchange for paying big ol’ fines to the FDA. Drinks can only be called “calorie-free” if they have fewer than 5; Diet Coke has less than 1.

8. Diet Coke may cause cancer.

A big maybe. Arguments about an aspartame-cancer connection have flared for years. Recently, Italian researchers concluded that aspartame does increase certain cancers in rats, including breast cancer. But the scientific truism applies: Rats aren't people. And more than 200 studies, including one on humans in 2006 by the National Cancer Institute, have found no evidence of this. Still, suspicious groups remain, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an ardent consumer advocacy group. What to do? Drink responsibly--and we don't mean downing the FDA's "acceptable" max of 21 cans of aspartame-sweetened soda a day for a 165-pound adult. Inside all the research there's an informal consensus that, for adults, a can a day is likely to do no harm.

Tons of cola drinkers have switched to diet formulas to slash their sugar intake. And avoiding foods with simple sugars as one of their first five ingredients can make your RealAge 3.6 years younger. Sweet!

How about just avoiding the toxic soda (diet and non) completely. Just read the back of the labels of soda and then do some google research on your own. I bet you'll opt for water or fruit juice instead.

This article is WAY misleading. If you want health, not just surviving, but true health.... stay away from anything man-made. Just eat the foods that God has created for us! He created them for a purpose!! As for aspartame..... I did have an ant problem last summer, the ants died within 2 days and no new ones have reappeared.

this article is (for me) very disturbing as it is widely known that the ingredients in diet coke are so unhealthy. I have to wonder the motive behind even writing an article like this!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! the propoganda is everywhere!!

Hey, this article isn't promoting diet coke! nowhere in here does it say drinking chemicals is healthful. Take it for what it is. I agree though, the stuff ain't good. there's no way it can be. it's highly unlikely that it will kill you, but I think you should drink minimal amounts of the stuff

I really wonder how many of these responses include people that smoke? As far as man-made goes, it is best that if you want totally natural, than eat sugercane right from the garden...

Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi are addictive. I drink about a gallon a day and can't shake the habit. The article mentions Aspartame, but what about the phenylalanine? I think this in conjunction with the caffiene that makes the diet sodas mildly addictive. Most people that drink diet pops don't lose weight, in fact its easy to gain weight. I think that's because the soda pop kills or disrupts the natural beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. It's also possible that the false sugar taste may trigger insulin to store calories as fat. Someone ought to look into this, but not with softdrink funding it. The softdrink companies are like cigarette companies. They probably already know the answer and don't want anyone else to know.

Hmmm...no information shared about how sodas (diet and regular) strip the body of vital minerals, hence the new Diet Coke "with added minerals". Bottom line, NO ONE should be drinking that much soda. And I personally feel there is some addictive chemical in Diet Coke, because if I start drinking it, I crave it like no other soda I've had.

This article is both false and misleading. If people are really drinking so much soda that calories become an issue, they are drinking too much. Ever notice that people who drink a lot of diet soda look tired, unhealthy, and often overweight. This is because the chemical (aspertame, etc.) are BAD for you! Wake up people! Drink WATER!

Seriously, how much did Diet Coke pay the person that wrote this article. The sad thing is that somebody who doesn't know better could read this and think that Diet Coke is a good drink for their diet. Do more research, its crap for you.

I think that big corporations like Coke, Pepsi, and even the U.S. Government tell you things you need to hear. Like how Diet Coke is not a killing machine. I think that maybe you should start believing things you hear because very intelligent people ( who know more about a subject than YOU ) have done a lot of research on normal everyday products to find any harmful effects they may have on your health and personal well-being. I say KUDOS to the writer of this article. Thank you for your very intelligent and well written display of knowledge and research. Very thoughtful, with just enough humor to keep me interested. KUDOS to YOU !!!

OH!! Who drinks 21 cans of soda a day?!?! If you seriously drink that much soda, you can't be blaming Coke for your poor health. I've never seen anyone out jogging while holding a nice frosty can of Pepsi. Just sayin', ya probably got more problems than spending all your money on diet soda.

The article is level-headed and, while a bit on the easy-on-Coke side, seems to be in agreement with the most reputable science writing. Nice job.

21 cans a day? goodness, that almost like chain smoking! LOL! I personally like Diet Coke ("real Coke" is way to sweet for me), but I also like other diet sodas, water, ice tea, juices, milk etc. Everything in moderation.

If aspartame isn't bad for you, why are many companies opting to go with Splenda? Not that Splenda is the ideal replacement either. Do they have something to hide? Aspartame is one molecule shy of being paint thinner. This article doesn't face the 'fact' that aspartame is not something anyone should consume, rats or people.

Yes, pretty bad stuff--mostly due to the high sodium content--think water retention, EEK! Caffein is the other villain. If you can get the caffein free variety your half-way home.
