Recent research such as that reported in the International Life Sciences of North America monograph on hydration notes that, contrary to popular opinion, coffee does not have a dehydrating effect in people who are accustomed to drinking it.

Theoretically, wouldn't it be true, that cold beverages and foods should help you lose weight, since your body would need to expend calories to heat them up to a temperature necessary for digestion?

If you keep thinking about weight all the time---you'll continue to have a weight problem. Learn to put food in perspective. Don't make it your number one priority. Learn to eat just enough to maintain your health and no more. Stop reading about food, thinking about it, picturing it your mind. Life is more than eating!

Good point Gene R. I agree... we tend to obsess about food. Following a healthy eating plan is not rocket science just common sense mostly. We should simplify our relationship to food. Eat to live, don't live to eat!

Nicely said Gene R but it should be at the top and some do have to think more on what and when they eat than do others like myself a brittle diabetic of 29 years but I do very much agree life is way more than food and eatting! Shoot if I didnt HAVE to eat I wouldnt ...not that thats good coz I dont enough as it is heh which can slow down your metabolism...kind of a double edge sword and carebear omg lol I often wonder about that too when I rea dor hear about articles of this content, makes sense to me lol

It's not rocket science, take in more than you burn off and you will gain weight. There are exceptions but, for the most part it's that simple. Too many try to over complicate the issue or look for some magical answer to the problem. One which will keep the weight off without effort or paying attention to common sense such as exercise. Everyone knows exercise is good for you and helps keep weight off but, most look for a way around the obvious.

Although exercise and diet are pretty much the key, you need to also throw into the mix that your metabolism and the healthy probiotics that live in your digestive tract or system also begin to diminish as you get older. The first eye-opener as to how big of an effect this plays on what you eat and how much you can eat and burn off, happens somewhere in your mid to late 30's. YIPPEE!!!

Stop dieting and eat what your body needs. Drink, Drink, Drink. We are actually thirsty many times when we snack. Stay hydrated. Nice clean water. or if you prefer an herb tea. What ever, stop beating yourself up. You are you no matter what. You have to like you and be happy before you connect with others.

Sorry, tha tap water where my husband and I live is absolutely horrible, it actually smells like sewage and especially in the summer months, it's even worse. I will forever drink water from a bottle.

Not so fast! Tap water has its cons. Ya OK it's been tested daily, but when it runs underneath your house and thru your water pipes. The question you wanna ask yourself is; when was the last time I check my pipes, can I say confidently that there is no rust in it? If there is, good luck.

EXCERCISE EXCERCISE EXCERCISE!!!!!!!!!!!! It's what keeps bones healthy, body mass index improves, there's nothing like getting those puppies moving to keep off those excess pounds. May be hard getting to the gym, but once you're there, you'll be happy you made the move! Long life to all.

Whats the big deal? Gaining a few pounds 10-20 lbs is not going to affect your health in the short term in any drastic way unless you are generally inactive and cannot lose it. Aestetically, very few people would notice your love handles and if it bothers them why would you associate with such superficial people? If you have a bigger weight issue well- it's certainly not because you had an extra pastry or porkchop over the holidays. Get real people. Weight and body mass is not the issue. Having realistic health goals and a healthy self image is what really matters. Those people who freak out over 5lbs or 5 oz are the ones who are sick and mentally unbalanced. Eat whatever you want - but balance it with an understanding of your own body and common sense. Enjoy holiday traditions, food and life.

For those of you that say eating " is common sense" well obviously you're incorrect. If you were right then we would not have obese people looking to loose weight. It's not rocket science nor is it just "known" HOW to eat. So many factors play into weight gain. Learning what certain foods and combination of foods can do for you is also key. Then you worry about portions and how often you should eat. You MUST also know which foods you SHOULD NOT eat for various reasons B/C some of the things society considers "healthy really IS NOT!" Anyway, that's all I'll say. Any tibit of healthy information helpful at any given time.

The chai syrup used at most coffee shops for latte does contain a substantial amount of caffeine. Occasionally you might find one with a decaf variety, but don't count on it. Also, chai contains many of the warming spices mentioned in this article, such as pepper, so you might as well just get a non-fat gingerbread latte if you want, same difference.

You are leaving tap water up the the government. They test the water then two days later inform the public that two days ago there was a probelm and they should now boil their water.

Try testing your tap water with a home test kit. The filter systems (ie PUR) seems the way to go, but if you want to help the environment- stop just worrying about those plastic bottles and PLEASE RECYCLE!

If you have good tap water- drink it. If not use a filter or have bottled water delivered in those big 5 gallon jugs and fill a re-usable container to carry. The 5 gal. jugs are collected and re-used by the water co. and saves the environment. As far as the weight issue, Americans eat more per serving than anyone on the planet! Cut your portions and exercise. It's simple math- burn more than you consume and you will lose weight.
