There is no such thing as a "Super food" that's good for everyone, but those of us who can eat soy, it's great. I use edamame pods as appetizers and the only problem I've had there is when someone thinks the pod is edible.

Allergies are not the only problem. Soy can interfere with your body's absorption of the thyroid hormone or the replacement meds. This can lead to hypothyroidism. I had to stop drinking soy milk for this reason.

Also soy mimicks estrogen, so for women who are already producing normal amounts of estrogen, as well as babies and children, soy can have negative affects. I used to drink several glasses of soy milk a day and was having extreme PMS symptoms. My gynocologist had me cut out the soy and i saw a huge difference.

I have pretty much switched from cow's milk to soy milk. It's great on cereal and the chocolate variety is quite tasty!!!!

And what does regular daily consumption of soy foods do to a man's hormone levels? That's another important consideration.

My dairy allergic daughter drinks soy milk, and we cook with it also. I'm surprised to hear anyone mention possible negative effects since her allergist and pediatrician have never mentioned them. As a sidenote, I am on thyroid replacement meds. I don't eat or drink ANYTHING within an hour of taking my med with the exception of water, since many foods can interfere with it's absorption.

As mentioned above, soy mimics estrogen. Being a 2 year breast cancer survivor my oncologist advised me to stay away from soy. Be careful.

My husband and I both like to eat shelled edameme like we would peas or limas. They are a great tasting and could for you side dish. Mix them instead of limas with corn and carrots for succitash.

Owning to the fact that soy is high in phyto-estrogens, and baby boys are fed soy formula from birth, and soy is added to seemingly every processed food, and pseudo-estrogens can't be filtered from the drinking water, real boys may be hard to find in the near future. Please educate yourself!

(ee-dah-mommy)? Eat-a-mommy? Is that supposed to be a mnemonic? Because it's pronounced "eh dah mah meh" where the "eh" sound is like the "e" in "bed". Incidentally, I find the best soy product in terms of versatility to be TVP. It makes great chili

I love Soy milk. I hope I don't have negitive side effects. I've used it for years! I think it helps my joints after I jog, yes at fourty-three years old after never being able to jog I started at forty-one yr's old. I enjoy it with sprouted grain cereal after a long walk and jog and I feel GREAT all day long! My tip for the day: As with all things drink it and use it with moderation!

Yes, soy can cause mens estrogen to rise, There are many other and better alternatives to soy. Available is also rice, almond, and best of all Hemp milk. Hemp is such a good source of protein, all your essential amino acids and omegas. And real quick touching on snack bars: They CANT have cholesterol unless there are animal products in them. NOTHING, and I MEAN NOTHING even has cholesterol in it except animal products: Meat, fish, poultry, milk, eggs, yogurt ect... What to lower your cholesterol? Stop eating Cholesterol. It is that simple! We should be at 100 not 150+ 1/3 of all people who die of hard attacks are in the "good" range according to doctors.

I agree with dbuszin - I have Hashimoto's disease (autoimmune thyroiditis) and eating or drinking soy products (even a small amount) causes inflammation of my thyroid gland.

Out of curiousity, how many people drink cow's milk (skim milk is fat free!)---nature's perfect food? It is very dense in nutrients---protein, vitamins, minerals! Cow's milk is a great beverage that everyone can enjoy (lactose-free milk is available as well). It has less estrogen than soy beverages. Drinking cow's milk is very healthful and tasty! Got (cow's) milk?

Soy actually prevents the body from absorbing iron, especially in women. This can be a real problem, causing anemia, especially for veggitarians who may have trouble getting enough iron to begin with.

Cow's milk, my friends, is great for calves. It is NOT nature's perfect food for humans and in fact has been shown to cause juvenile diabetes- credit the American academy of Pediatrics. Candybargirl- work for the Dairy lobby or are you just well-brainwashed? As far as soy estrogen, Japanese women who consume a traditional Japanese diet (with tofu etc but they do not typically wash down food or cereal with soy milk like the Western diet)- have had extremely low rates of breast cancer. Cow's milk is far more likely to cause breast cancer- especially if your milk came from RBST treated cows- that's a nasty hormone meant to get MORE milk from the cows but it can cause cancers to grow faster in humans. (recombinant-bovine-somatatropin. you can look this up- spelling aprox. correct) We need to get out of the habbit of acting like babies drinking milk all our life anyway. It is true some women are advised to minimize their consumption of soy if their estrogens are too high but it is not really a big problem- it's about balance. And stay away from cows milk- it is hell on the immune system!

Soy is not the superfood some people rave about !! Soy causes a lot of problems. Skin problems (e.g eczema), hormonal imbalance, infertility etc to name a few. So please do not follow the latest hype only to find yourself end up in a hole.

The thyroid gland is probably the most important gland all creatures have: it affects body temperature, mental acuity, fertility, skin & hair health, weight gain, energy levels; it regulates every system our bodies have. (You can look it up.) Try also looking at this website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goitrogen . If you have a slow (hypo) thyroid, you'll see that soy impairs thyroid function. If you have a fast (hyper) thyroid, you're probably ok using it.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is a condition in which the immune system has run amok and is attacking the thyroid. It eventually destroys the thyroid & there is no cure. The only treatment is to take thyroid replacement hormone. It seems like more than just a coincidence that the Japanese consume so much soy, and this condition is named for the Japanese doctor who uncovered it. Japanese women may have less breast cancer, but how healthy are their thyroids & immune systems in general?

Everything in moderation, folks. You can't LIVE on soy. I use soy milk on cereal once or twice a week and eat Boca burgers 4 or 5 meals a week. But going 100% soy for 3 meals a day couldn't be any better for you than going 100% hog brains 3 meals a day. Variety, variety, variety...

Too much soy is bad for you, too much cow's milk is bad, too much of ANYthing is bad. And too much processed 'food' is bad. Two main problems food-wise in this country. We all jump all over the latest food fad and eat it like it's going out of style, and we process the heck out of everything. The more your diet is made up of WHOLE, organic, unprocessed, unadulterated real food, the better. Whole organic soybeans. Whole, raw, unpasteurized, un-homogenized milk. Whole organic grains. Real, organic 100% grass fed beef. And of course lots of organic fruits and veg. NOT soymilk. NOT hormone and drug filled cow's milk. Not white bread. Not hormone and drug filled meat. Not sugar filled 'fruit snacks' or other processed rubbish. That's NOT food. At least 70% of what the avg American eats isn't even food. Partially hydro this and high fructose that and a ton of other unpronounceable stuff. NOT FOOD!!! No wonder we're all dying of cancer and heart disease epidemics in this country. We're too lazy and stupid to go to the market, buy real, whole food, and then prepare it at home. It's not that tough.

I love all these "SOY SCARE" posts by Dairy Associations...they don't want you to drink soy milk because it cuts into their profits. Soy is delicious and healthy for men and women...To the Dairy Assoc. internet police----Please try other tactics because the one's your using are transparent to educated people...SOY Milk is great...no artificial growth hormones, no cholesterol, no lactose, and lasts a hell of a lot longer..oy yeah and no souring taste..
