Good News for Bacon Lovers!

Although bacon's nearly carb-free status gained it 15 minutes of fame back when the Atkins diet was hot, no one with a health conscience can look at it today and see anything more than strips of saturated fat and salt. But that doesn't mean we don't crave it! To assuage our longing for crispy, smoky bacon, we gave a lot of alternatives a taste test. Five made the cut with our die-hard bacon lovers. BLTs anyone?!

THE REAL THING
2 strips = 80 calories, 8g fat (3.5 sat fat), 300mg sodium, 4g protein
If you're going to indulge in gen-u-ine bacon, it's not so much the calories you'll regret. It's the hit of skin-aging, heart-threatening, well-salted, grease-dripping saturated fat.

THE WINNERS!
Morning Star Bacon Strips

2 strips = 60 calories, 4.5g fat (.5g sat fat), 220mg sodium, 2g protein
Of all the veggie-bacons we tried, this was the only one that made the grade with our testers. Not only do these soy-based strips smell like bacon as you fry them up, they taste surprisingly close to the real thing. And they cook up much crispier than you would expect, despite having almost no bad fats. Find them in your freezer section.

Trader Joe's Applewood Smoked Turkey Bacon
2 strips= 60 calories, 2.5g of fat (0g sat fat), 250mg sodium, 7g protein
Surprisingly, meat-based turkey bacons don't fry up to nearly the same crispiness as the Morning Star strips. The texture is softer and chewier -- more like Canadian bacon -- but the taste is rich, smoky, and nicely flavors an egg sandwich.

Wellshire Farms Uncured All Natural Turkey Bacon
2 strips= 40 calories, 1g fat (0g sat fat), 360mg sodium, 6g protein
This all-natural brand tastes so hearty, it's hard to believe each strip -- and they're big -- contains only 20 calories and just a trace of fat. If you can live without the crunch of pork bacon, this one tastes the most indulgent while doing the least diet damage. Plus there are no preservatives, antibiotics, or nitrates, though it's high on the sodium side.

THE RUNNERS-UP
Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon

2 strips = 40 calories, 0g fat (0g sat fat), 280mg sodium, 6g protein
Like the other turkey bacons, this extra-lean variety isn't a clone of the real thing, but if you think "chewy" rather than "crispy," the rich, smoked flavor will liven up a sandwich or spinach salad. And it's hard to knock 0 fat grams.

Oscar Meyer Turkey Bacon
2 strips= 70 calories, 6g fat (1g sat fat), 380mg sodium, 4g protein
It comes closest to matching the true aroma and flavor of pork bacon (maybe it's all that salt). Tip: It cooks up super fast in the microwave, so if you're not careful, you have bacon chips instead of strips. But don't toss them if that happens -- crumbled up, the bacon bits make a tasty topping for a salad or baked potato.

At RealAge, there's a reason we call saturated fat -- the artery-clogging kind that, appropriately, saturates meat and whole-milk dairy foods -- an aging fat: Avoiding it alone can make your RealAge more than 4 years younger!

I've tried the Jenny-O and thought it was disgusting, but Butterball puts out a turkey bacon that is very tasty.

There is absolutely no scientific/unbiased study that says bacon is bad for you. The best study to show that eating carbs is bad for you is the american public itself. When bacon was the mainstay the obesity rate was 16 percent, now with all those "Healthy" complex carbohydrates our obesity rate increased to 60 percent. Good Job!!!!!!!!!

What ever happened to good ol' canadian bacon? It's significantly lower in saturated fat and calories and it doesn't taste like a bacon substitute. The kind I have has 60 calories per serving (four slices) and 1.5 total fat with no saturated fat, and it's delicious!

"Funny" is not exactly the word I would choose. Yes, my grandparents and parents did eat all of the "real things" like bacon, red meat and ham. They looked great at their funerals. All died of coronary heart blockages before reaching 60 years of age. I physically saw the plague in the veins during one of the autopsies. I've had four bypasses at age 38. I'm glad to see the fat free bacon on the grocery shelf, I'd like to live past 60 myself. Watch what you eat and get plenty of exercise.

I Like the turky bacon, it taste a lot like bacon, BUT, I have a problem with all that salt. I'm not to have all that salt. So in my case no bacon is best, but if i want to indulge for a treat once in a while is ok. I remember my parents we grew up on a farm and we had bacon in the smoke house and was that good bacon,,,,, Those farmers ate a lot of good food and bacon was right in the mix , straight from the smoke house yummy, My husbands parents lived to almost 100 years old and they ate eggs and bacon every day on the farm, I have to agree with doc who wants imitation food. To eat good we need to eat all raw food not cooked at all. use a juicer and eat raw vegs and fruit . lean meat and u will be better off. Cooked food is dead food. thanks rose.....

Demonizing a food and the people who enjoy it simply because you don't like it isn't science, isn't healthful and most certainly isn't sound nutrition. Butter good- margairne bad, whoops, margarine good - butter bad, whoops, margarine bad butter maybe - same with eggs. The scare du jour may get you grant money and may make money for a special interest group but it isn't anything people use to make health decisions.

All these bacons are full of garbage when I say garbage I mean chemicals. Years ago when bacon and sausage were consumed there weren't these type of additives. Through time they have been added to prolong the life of food. Ever wonder why heart disease, cancers and other problems plague the body? Large food companies continue to feed us what they think we should eat and a lot of people do not take the time to really check out what foods they are eating. For those of you who are really interested in learning more about food check out www.ravediet.com. They have a CD and book that will explain exactly what you are eating. If you are interested in Raw foods check out www.alissacohen.com. Both sites will change your life and your health forever. I am not affiliated with either site, I personally have bought both products and have begun a new time in my life.

I agree Doc. Eat real food. Get OUTSIDE the house or office and get some exercise and fresh air. It's hard to burn 3000 calories sitting behind a desk or in front of the tv. Do this, and you can eat your real bacon, remain thin, and live into your 90's like my great grandparents...who were farmers.

My grandparents & parents were all raised on a farm, so needless to say their diets weren't government/scientific 'healthy'; on the other hand, my grandfather lived to be 94 and my mom & dad to 81; ALL with healthy hearts. Live sensibly, enjoy food, and live for today.

Sorry to break it to you, but just because some people didn't follow the Atkins diet properly and thus dropped off it doesn't mean it's not "hot". And I have quite a health conscience, thank you. Bacon is perfectly fine as long as you don't eat several servings, which is what too many people do. People who think low-carb diets are terrible or just a fad need to read the books. Either Atkins or South Beach will do, just read it and don't rely on what you hear from friends or over the Net. If you follow the average American diet, I can almost guarantee I eat more vegetables than you do. [/pet peeve rant]

I think that eating anything in MODERATION is the key. Eating regular bacon maybe once a month is not to going to clog your arteries the same way it would if you were eating it at every meal everyday. Besides, there is NO substitute for that SALTY GOODNESS!!!

The atkin comments are completely out of line here. I eat 3-4 strips of bacon every morning (or sausage) and 3-4 eggs.. EVERY DAY.... i love it.. my lipid levels after one year are COMPLETELY normal.. got that folks? I am type 2 diabetic and living drug free and losing weight. They are lying to you. Saturated fats are fine if you avoid sugar.. if you are eating a DEADLY high carb life.. then yes.. avoid bacon and all fat like the plague... but if you live a HEALTHY low carb lifestyle... LOOK OUT PIGS! this writer should be slapped.
