I prepare smoothies every evening. I keep frozen fruit on hand. I peel and freeze my bananas and buy the large bags of frozen strawberries, blueberries, pineapples and mangoes. I let them sit in the blender for about 20 minutes, just to thaw a little and then pour in Silk soy milk. Really delicious.

shirleydement: depends. I much prefer making my own as smoothies sold are ripoffs, plus making your own can help you decide what exactly YOU want to your smoothie, & what proportion of which. Some shops do make nice smoothies, jamba juice probably does. But I hate the kind I got in an asian store, it was 60% ice! One puny banana, a little milk, & thats it! a total rip off!

jbenaquisto - that frozen fruit smoothie you mention is my favorite, too, only i'm partial to rice milk. i skip the sugar altogether (when you have fruit, why add sugar?) instead, to take the edge off the tangy yogurt, i use honey. i also just read about agave nectar natural sweetener in imbibe magazine....it's supposed to be great for everything from smoothies to cocktails!

I put natural lowfat vanilla yogurt in the blender with fat free vanilla soy milk, bananas, strawberries (or sometimes I use natural peanut butter in place of the strawberries) a scoop of vanilla whey protein, a couple teaspoons ground flax seed meal, and ice- it is yummy and very filling for an afternoon snack!

figwaah you are obviously vegan and unless someone wants to be aslo there is nothing wrong with milk in smoothies. who on earth has date or agave syrup anyway?

Guys... remember to be careful with the smoothies. YOU DO NOT NEED to add sugar to it. Just leave it out. The natural sugar from the fruit should be enough, if it isn't - then go to a health food store and get Stevia. You'll only need a tiny bit (a drop or two to sweeten it up.
Also be aware of how much fruit you're using. When you pulverize the fruit the sugar that's released can be just as much as the sugar that's in a soda.
I'd also take the time to take that blender apart and make sure those blades are cleaned and food free. It doesn't take long for bacteria to grow.

Every day I make a smoothie and drink on the way to work. I use the fruit purees and protein drinks that are in the produce section of the grocery store as a base. I keep five or six in my fridge, and mix in whatever I feel like having with frozen fruit or a banana. Also add silken tofu for a no-taste protein boost. I top off with soy milk. They taste great and have a lot of protein.
I agree with #17...smoothies are about eating something healthy. So why would you add an artificial sweetener? Just look at the name 'artificial'...that means it is not real. Our bodies are not made to process chemicals.

Our appricot tree has given uss a lot of fruit this year. The kids and I blended 2 pitted apricots w/skins on, ice and 1/2 cup of organic applejuice for a tart and refreshing "smoothie."

In a blender at "smoothie" speed:
Pineapple, mango, low fat yogurt, skimmed milk and ice....tastes like Indian Lassi, but if you replace the mango with shredded coconut, you will get a luscious caribbean colada...Splenda is a must for sweetening....all time fav's, must try!!!

With smoothies it doesnt matter what fruits you use. If you are allergic to bananas then use another fruit. It is a little more difficult if you have diverticulitus. Sorry about that one!!! You could try the green smoothies that was suggested previously. My favorite smoothies always have some type of coffee in it!! YUM...But my husband love Mango and banana! So for a simple smoothie, pick a fruit, freeze it, add sugar (or substitute) add milk...blend! Always a great morning starter!

Ok, my version of the smoothie that has a little more protein to balance it out is the following:
Nonfat frozen yogurt
Black cherries (frozen)
Skim Milk
and vanilla flavored Protein Powder!
Oh, and by the way (I am a personal trainer) if you make the smoothie the right way then it is extremely healthy!!!!! :)

Here is what I make every single day:
Frozen berries
banana
tablespoon plain lowfat yogurt
couple tablespoons of flax seeds (in powder form)
scoop of strawberry-banana protein powder from the health food
store
small scoop of greens+ powder
small handful of walnuts
little of bit grape nuts cereal or oats (for more fiber)
green tea
The berries give it a sweet flavor but if you want it to be sweeter, squirt a little bit of Agave Nectar - it's a natural sweetner and is sweeter than honey....
yum yum! I'm addicted...i think i'll go make one now....

I love to make smoothies!!!! I am a weight watcher and if you use a cup of fresh strawberries, about 1/2c. real cranberry juice(unsweetened), 1/2c. orange juice, 3/4 to 1 c. slpenda that you use for baking and cooking and 2 to 3c. of ice blend till ice is crushed and stuff in blender is all turning.....it is the greatest!!! It is 3 pts. on weight watchers!!! Tart, sweet, cooling drink for the summer, that can fill you up! Hope you enjoy!

Smoothies are great - but agreed with what some people said about the artificial sweeteners and/or yogurt. I think if you're going for the max on the health value, skip the sugar and use agave or honey for sweetener. Watch out for the yogurts as a lot of them do have sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. I stick with Stonyfield as it's organic. The plain one has no sugar, and the others have sugar but again it's organic.

My 14 year old son makes his own all the time. His fav recipe is Vanilla bean yogurt any brand, low fat milk, carnation vanilla instant breakfast mix, 1/2 fresh mango and 1/2 nectarine. Blended with soft ice (we get it from Sonic Drive-through). He will eat these over ice cream any day! And the beauty is he makes it himself.

I'd just like to pass along something that I do that others might find helpful: I love making smoothies but don't like the mess so I make it worthwhile by freezing the leftover smoothie into a reusable plastic popcicle container. If you don't have a container like mine, a person could use dixie cups and popcicle sticks. Also, if you aren't into popcicles, put the leftover smoothie mix in ice cube tray and freeze them. Then the next time you make a smoothie, add the smoothie ice cubes in for extra flavor.

ok, for the vegans, milk is not bad for you, especially organic milk. Add them to your smoothies if you want. You shouldn't force your opinions on other people.

Try 8th continent light regular, vanilla or chocolate soymilk. This stuff is really good- rich and not at all beany-tasting. I even use the vanilla in my coffee. The regular is just 2 carbs a cup, too. Anyone have any ideas for low-carb smoothies? I like the green one, thanks scottwouw

we use Stevia if we are using anything to sweeten. most of the time you don't need a sweetener. Nutiva makes a hemp protein powder that is also a great source of fiber. We use almond milk, a splash of a 100% juice and then various frozen fruits, either from a package or from the farmers market. It's very healthy for you and no preservatives like the store bought stuff, and cheaper than the smoothie places. a Magic Bullet keeps ya from having to wash a blender AND a glass. there are other blenders out there that use the glass to blend in. It's great!!
