Why You Should Eat What You Crave

POST A COMMENT »

You've been told way too often to resist cravings. You know: "When cookies call, munch on carrots. When ice cream screams, scoop up some cottage cheese." Yeah, right. Better advice: When you've just gotta have it, give in -- but eat the healthiest version of whatever it is you're lusting after. And try to buy a single portion so there are no leftovers to tempt you the next day, when the crisis has passed. Some yummy options:

IF ONLY CHOCOLATE WILL DO
GO FOR:
Hershey's Antioxidant Milk Chocolate OR Dove Dark Chocolate Singles (1.3 oz. bars)
WHY:
You'll be feasting on flavanols -- the compounds that make dark chocolate so heart-healthy. Dove and other dark chocolates have them naturally, but Hershey's recently added them to its milk chocolate bar for those who prefer moo juice in their candy. Bonus: Both come in at under 200 calories, while other popular candy bars push the 300-calorie mark.

IF ONLY Real ICE CREAM WILL DO
GO FOR:
Blue Bunny Personals Double Strawberry Light OR a small cone at Dairy Queen
WHY: The portions are perfect. A container of Blue Bunny Personals (sold at Wal-Mart) holds just a single cup -- technically two servings, but at 200 calories and 4 grams of fat, you can polish it off in one sitting without guilt. If you want the ice cream-stand experience, a small soft-serve Dairy Queen chocolate or vanilla cone will lick your craving for 230 to 240 calories and 7 to 8  grams of fat.

IF ONLY COOKIES WILL DO
GO FOR: Nabisco 100% Whole Grain Newtons Minis

WHY: They contain whole grains, fiber, vitamin A -- you even get calcium without having to dunk them in milk. Each 130-calorie packet of eight cookies delivers 150 milligrams of the mighty mineral -- about as much as 4 ounces of skim milk. The only drawback: They're sold in six packs, so share the extras with fellow cookie cravers.

IF ONLY A DOUGHNUT WILL DO
GO FOR: Entenmann's Softee Plain Donut Singles
WHY:
We almost fell for Krispy Kreme's Whole Wheat Glazed, which at 180 calories appear to be one of the skinniest, healthiest options sold individually. The bummer: Hidden inside are 3.5 grams of scary trans fats. All Entenmann's doughnuts, on the other hand, are trans fats free, though for mysterious reasons the "singles" come two to a pack -- so share one with a friend and you'll only eat 170 calories each.

IF ONLY PIE WILL DO
GO FOR: A slice of pumpkin OR blueberry
WHY:
Choose pumpkin and you'll get a serving of veggies (thanks to the vitamin A-packed pumpkin) and quite a bit of calcium (courtesy of evaporated milk) for about 230 calories, no matter which brand you buy. Remember: Just fork over the cash for a slice, not the whole deep dish. If you can handle 270 or so calories, blueberry pie is a healthy alternative -- the berries are chock-full of cancer-fighting antioxidants.

IF ONLY CHIPS WILL DO
GO FOR: A 1 1/8 oz. bag of Baked Lays
WHY:
Even though they're totally free of saturated and trans fat -- few other brands can claim that -- they taste good. So good that you need to buy the single-serve, 130-calorie bag. With the family size, it's practically impossible to stop crunching when there are still chips this good in the bag.

The payoff for indulging like a smart cookie? Avoiding saturated and trans fats -- which most of these do completely, and even the few exceptions aren't outrageous -- can make your RealAge more than 4 years younger.

I don't know if I totally agree with the choices but I do agree that if the temptation is coming at you strong you should take care of it with some single serving version. For pie I would suggest a baked apple with cinnamon and a few raisins (as few as five can add a lot of sweetness). This treat is very low-cal and can be very satisfying.

this article is very misleading in advertising some of these items as "trans fat free"... the FDA allows companies to round DOWN to zero if the trans fat content is less than half a gram! than means that .49 could be stated as ZERO, NONE, NOT ONE, gram! If the ingredient list includes the words shortening, partially hydrogenated, or hydrogenated, the food contains trans fat.. baked lays contains partially hydrogenated soy bean oil, and yet it is listed as a healthy choice... it is recommended that we try to avoid ALL trans fats.

Baked Ruffles are SOOOO much tastier anyway. Baked Lays are dry and less crunchy than the ruffles.

Who would get a small cone at Dairy Queen?? A kid could eat it. Blizzards are my favorite and they are so hard to resist. After I eat P.F. Changs "Great Wall of Chocolate", I like to wash it down with an Oreo Blizzard. YUM!!!

eat what you want and burn the fat by doing excerise...common sense really. just watch you portions, and eat slower so your body has the time to tell you that you're full before you eat too much and feel ill.

I agree with this article. Eating a single serving of a food you like is not bad when you do it responsibly. I have chocolate covered peanuts at my desk; it takes me over 2 weeks to eat the bag. How? I have taught myself that once I satisfy the taste of what I want with just a few pieces, I'm good. Portion control and eating responsibly is what is all about to me. 36 @ 117 lbs, hey I'm smiling and not denying myself of anything and I do pay attention to the fat and cholesterol content. Your body is a machine, feed it and work it out!

Careful with that advice Rozzers. The bodies ability to burn off ingested calories is highly limited. The best way to maintain a healthy body and avoid putting on excess pounds is to watch your intake of calories. Exercise is certainly important, but you can't eat whatever you want so long as you exercise. The people who try this are destined to be disappointed.

I agree. It's not always what you eat it's how much you eat. Always portion foods. I've lost 50 lbs. in about 2 years just by portioning my food and exercising regularly. I've also cut out cafine and sugers (i.e. sodas and coffees). If I absolutely have to have a coffee I get a decafe and add a sweetner such as splenda, and I get a small becuase it's usually the taste of coffee that I'm after anyway, not the so cafinated up you can't even sleep effect.

Skinny Cow mini fudge bars, are amazing, they taste great, as good as fudgesicles, and they are only 50 calories! It's one treat I don't feel guilty having myself or giving my kids. Yay SKINNY COW!

I eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream every night. This seems to take care of the cravings, as well as satisfy my lust, and my desire to indulge. I have a little bit of guilt, I suppose, but nothing unmanageable.

This advice is only good for people who don't have a problem with food. If you are morbidly obese and have a food addiction, there is no way you can only eat one donut of any variety without spiralling out of control. Resist temptation by going on a lower carb diet like me and we have those cravings.

This is a load of bullcrap. A tiny amount of whole grains doesn't make a cookie good for you, and telling yourself that these foods aren't junk won't make them good for you. If you want to eat chocolate as a health food, you can - but go for chocolate containing 70% or more cocao, NOT milk chocolate. All chocolate has antioxidents, but if your chocolate bar contains more sugar than chocolate, you're not doing yourself any favors.

You know what I don't like: Carbs are mentioned in any of this. We need good choices that also include low carb counts, and of the healthy type... I try to keep my "cheating" to once a week and then I make it something really spectacular, mint oreo blizzard OH YEAH!

Weight Watchers or Smart Ones have come up with some great tasting desserts that are low in calories and taste great!! Also, if you really like ice cream sandwhiches then get the low fat chocolate graham crackers and fat free cool whip. put about an inch or inch and a half of cool whip between two graham crackers, wrap them in plastic wrap and then freeze. Tastes just as good as a real icecream sandwich and has WAY less fat and calories!

I agree with several of the postings here. Some people are able to eat whatever they want, exercise and they are good. Others have to really watch their calorie intake in order to lose or stay at current weight. It really depends on the individuals metabolism. For those that tend to binge, eating a small portion to curb a craving is better than relapsing and eating a larger serving.

I disagree with this article. When I crave something, I tell myself it will pass and it does. I'm 40 years old, 5' 7" and 126 pounds, so I think I am living proof that you can overcome cravings. The cravings DO pass, so just remind yourself that and keep moving. Or, you may try drinking a glass of water; often, we believe we are hungry when we're really dehydrated. As for the cravings passing, the same goes for cigarettes; I quit after smoking a pack a day for 13 years.

I lost 60 lbs in seven months eating as large of portions as I wanted, including ice cream and stuff like that for desert, having Pizza once a week and eating out occasionally. Know what I did? Martial Arts, which is another form of excersize. It irks me when people come here and tell you that "you'll never do it if you don't eat THIS way" etc. It's incorrect becuase the major and main factors in this situation are A)how bad you want to shape up and B)how hard you work for it. I'm proof - healthy as I've ever been and 60 lbs lighter in under a year. Nothing is impossible as long as you don't quit.
