Do we really need a recipe for hot chocolate??? If you are going to give a simple recipe that everyone knows at least change it up a little. Tell them to add Andes mints or serve with a candy cane to give it the peppermint holiday taste. And don't ruin hot chocolate with artificial sweeteners.

This recipe might be simple and found on the back of a hersheys coco can but it is a lot better than the pre-made packets. It's a classic. And it's easy to make on your stove top. Just add a little vanilla or whatever you want to. What's the big deal with all the negative comments on here?

I don't understand why anyone would judge someones choice of milk XD lol, thats just insane; knowing that everyone has different taste. However I do approve of this hot chocolate idea =), in fact I had some just this morning, with homemade whipcream, made by an ikea milk beater LOL.

HaHa, I've got to play Dvl's advocate here and be a little naughty... it doesn't matter how you make your hot cocoa as long s you put about 1/2 oz (or a full oz, LOL) of pepermint schnapps! I personally preffer ICE 101, 1/2 oz will do great pepermint cocoa flavor!

unless someone is going to drink this cocoa w/artificial sweetners every day for years and years .. i'm pretty sure one recipe of this cocoa (a few mugs worth) with the ingredients suggested are NOT going to harm anyone during the holiday season!
ENJOY!

I have to 100% whole heartedly agreee that this article is a bunch of Hot Chocolate Crap!
I clicked on the link on the front page and read this article just so I could be given the recipe on the back of a tin of unsweetened cocoa poweder?
What other 'fantastic' recipes are in your book? Perhaps the following?
-Hoilday Eggnog: Open up carton of eggnog, pour in a glass top with a little nutmeg
-Chocolate Chip Cookies: Open up packet of Chips Ahoy and put on plate.. for that special touch pour a bag of chocolate chips around the edge?
-Chunky Garden Salsa: Twist lid off of salsa jar and serve
Dude your lame and Yahoo is more lame for letting this sh!t be on the front page and wasting my time.
well it sounds easy enough 4 even me 2 make without burning it lol, so I appreciate it even though I already knew that recipe but put some whipped topping it's really yummy :) happy christmas 2 all and good cheer.

Add a spoon of vanilla, and if you put the hot chocolate in a heat resistant mug, you can sprinkle little marshmallows on top and put it under the broiler for long enough to brown the marshmallows! Yummy Goodness!
Or if you have one of those fancy torches like you use for creme brulee, you can use that to brown the marshmallows.

The intro was great.
I don't know if this would work for this recipe (I don't see why not) but there are just 3 of us in my house and one of us isn't really into hot chocolate. But what I do is put the leftover stuff in a pitcher and take it out and reheat in the microwave or on the stove up to a few days after!
But if you ask me cookies are much more fun than coco. Why not try both! LOL!

For those of you complaining about fake sugar. At the last Kansas Nursing Assoc. convention I had the pleasure of discussing research with a nurse researcher who looked into all the research about fake sugar. The research she found against fake sugar was paid for by **Gasp** the SUGAR producers and the amounts of fake sugar you would have to consume AT ONE TIME to even be dangeous or cancer causing would be like pouring a mountain of the stuff into your coffee or baking.
Furthermore since you're all worried about cancer you better quit grilling or bbq'ing because it is a KNOWN fact that when the fat drips down onto the hot charcoals and burns that it releases a known carcinogen into the air and the food above it. I would presume that this goes the same for when it incinerates in afrying pan as well.
Also if you live in an older house you better not take steaming showers or have ANY steam being made in the house. The steam releases Radon from the environment and building materials. Radon is known to CAUSE CANCER!
Also best not live, or go to school, near those Big Power lines and substations. While the industry and govt says that there is no proof of the cause, communities that are near them have higher incidences of childhood leukemias.
And that doesn't even touch the pollution in the air or in your HOUSE...
get a grip people, calm down about the whole cancer scare, and move on... nothing to see there!

Ya know...this article was about building traditions and getting to spend quality time with your kids NOT what is wrong with a recipe!!! I don't think it would really matter if you used the stuff in little packets that you add hot water too...it's the tradition and kids that matter!! Quit being so negative!

Me and my babies have hot chocolate every night together before bedtime, and my daughter reads her story of the day to us. Its a nice way to wrap up the evening and I hope that some day they look back on that time with fond memories.

I also don't understand why the author goes through the trouble to specify unsweetened cocoa powder only to suggest adding plain old sugar. There are so many wonderful sweetened cocoa powders out there. I drink so much hot chocolate during the wintertime, and I am absolutely addicted to Ghirardelli chocolate powder, but really any shavings or powder made from high quality milk or dark chocolate would be wonderful. I'm sure you could even buy a hunk of really delicious chocolate, shave it yourself, and use that. I always use whole milk, but wow soy milk hot chocolate sounds really delicious. I've never had rice milk but that sounds really delicious too. Thanks for the tips.

There is nothing wrong with this recipe. It would be a simple tradition to keep up once started. ... That's about how I make it, except I usually use half hot water to melt the sugar and cocoa together then pour in the milk to cool it off. ... #1, it tastes better to me that way, #2, I don't worry about how much nutrition I killed off in the milk when I make it that way, and #3, you don't have to wait as long for it to cool.

I love hot cocoa and am always looking for new ways or ingredients to make it. I was stunded to see the lack of orginality for this recipe! What happened? I know hot cocoa is pretty basic but as chefs I would have exspected better than the directions from the back of a box! P.S. most cocoa IS "kid friendly" so what's the "big surprise" for this recipe?

Well folks, for those of us who go green and have our skin peel off at the merest whiff of cows' milk--soya (or rice, or whatever!) all the way!!!!! Cows' milk tastes like spit to me anyway, but that's probably because it makes me ill. Personally I'd skip the sweeteners too, chuck in a load of cardamom, orange oil, a pinch of chilli and a cinnamon stick--then a serious glurp of whisky to serve. Might not be good for kids mind, but hey--mine are grown up!!! :D

Also, this talk of hot chocolate bringing back childhood memories. The only kind of hot chocolate that would remind me of my childhood would be the packaged kind, with the little dehydrated marshmallows. That was my mom's specialty.
