Decorating Yet? Your Nose Knows

Ah, it smells like the holidays, doesn't it? Know what I mean?

There are so many wonderful aromas that can scent your home during the holidays to make it more warm and inviting. Naturally, food scents from the kitchen are a hands-down favorite for me; however, if you are not constantly cooking or baking to create these wonderful aromas, there other ways to charm family and friends with pleasing scents.

Besides decorating your home with the traditional garlands and wreaths of pine (which provide their own wonderful aroma), consider incorporating miniature rosemary bushes. Since rosemary is a common herb used in cooking, it is a pleasant way to remind your family and guests of the comforts of both nature and food -- especially appreciated in cold winter months. Just remember to keep their soil moist (not wet) and position them near as much sunlight as possible. If they survive the winter months indoors, they make a perfect addition to an outdoor herb garden!

I also love to decorate with food. My two favorite ways during the holiday season (and they're especially appealing to kids) are with oranges and gingerbread. I've been baking and building gingerbread houses for years. If you've never tried one, there are now easy starter kits on the market that are so much fun to try. It's a great holiday project for the whole family.

I love the scent of oranges in my home. Try piercing their skins with whole cloves (making decorative designs) and hanging them with beautiful ribbons. It's another kid-friendly project for the home and makes for a perfect holiday tradition. They are so deliciously fragrant and beautiful to look at.

A fun and easy way to add great aromas to the house is to place things like an apple core or two, some cinnamon, nutmeg and a little water into a pie pan. Place this in the oven on warm or, if your pilot light creates enough heat there's no need to turn on the oven at all. In no time, your house will have the smells of fresh apple pie. This technique can be used with many different fruits and spices...experiement and enjoy!

I'm not impressed by this recipe either. You may as well hook up a pack of swiss mocha. Chef needs to come better than that.
