These two homemade pet treats come from my mother and my dear friend Scott. They're wholesome snacks for dogs and cats and simple enough for children to make.
KID-FRIENDLY CANINE COOKIES
My mother Addie Mae taught me how to make these cookies for my dog Freckles. He loved them, and because of them, learned many new tricks.
3 (2.5 ounce) jars baby food (vegetable or meat varieties)
½ cup plain Cream of Wheat
In a mixing bowl thoroughly combine ingredients. Using a teaspoon, drop mixture onto a dinner-size plate covered with wax paper. Cover with paper towels or a paper plate.
Microwave on HIGH setting for 4-5 minutes. Remove and cool completely before serving. Refrigerate remaining cookies in an air-tight container.
ROMEO'S TREATS (CAT TREATS)
This recipe is from my friend Scott in Chicago, who loves to feed these treats to his spoiled cat Romeo.
7 ounces sardines, (drained if canned) mashed
½ cup plain wheat germ
¼ cup dry non-fat milk
non-stick cooking spray
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, thoroughly combine all ingredients. Form mixture into small, ½-inch-sized balls. (Should make approx. 2 dozen.) Place balls evenly on greased cookie sheet. Gently flatten each ball with a fork.
Bake 5-10 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove and cool completely before serving. Store the remaining cookies in an air-tight container.
